Wedding photography

Im keen to find anyone who is using the K5 for weddings.

Any feedback, on the quality compared to the so called big brands would be appreciated. In particular the overall IQ at 16 x 12 inch prints, how do you find the K5 handles highlights and what lenses do you guys use.

Cheers

Pete

Hi Pete.
I have the K-5 but have yet to be able to run a wedding with it. Nevertheless, I have done weddings with cameras starting from the *ist D to the K20D and have found them all to be adequate for large prints. The 6Mp images from the *ist D might struggle a little with 16x12s but with some enlarging work on Photoshop it is possible. However with the 16Mp images of the K-5, you will have no problem getting high quality prints even up to 20x30.

My wife shoots weddings and uses a K5 (at this point) and in the past has used a K20/K7. The K7 is now relegated to back up/ second camera duty. K5 and K7/K20 both have no problems with large print sizes. K5 handles larger dynamic range situations a lot better. Camera tends to underexpose slightly for the highlights and easy to bring it up afterward.

Overall it is a nice camera and well able to handle weddings with the proper lenses/lighting in place.

Works perfectly for weddings and is better than anything short of a d3s, d3x

Don't buy into the garbage that you need a full frame camera or a specific brand to shoot a wedding. Any DSLR over 10mp will be good enough to give you professional quality images at any of the print sizes you'll realistically need.

My business partner and I just switched over from Canon and now use 2 K-5's and a Kr. It is adequate for the job. The limitations we have run into compared to canon are: 1) The autofocus is still not up to par with the 7D's we were using 2) PTTL has given us some problems (so we shoot manual and A mode) mainly overexposure. The Pentax's are smaller (easier on the wrists and hands) and easier to use (menu system and button layouts). The image quality is soo much better though. Especially at higher ISO's and dynamic range. No problems with black and whites. The last 3 weddings on our blog are examples of weddings we shot (- Home). We have made prints at 20x30 with NO problems. Oh ya. The lenses we use are Sigma 17-50 f2.8, DA* 16-50 f2.8, Sigma 85 1.4 (awesome lens), DA 35 f2.4, and a Tamron 70-200 2.8. I hope this helps,

Eric

Guys, don't forget the fact that weddings in England most of the time will be shot in dim old churches and it is wery possible that there won't be sunshine outside...

I've shot theatre, a Quinceaña (big wedding-like celebration of a 15 year old girl), and a robotics competition in the basement of a museum with my K5. My K7 could kick out lovely images that printed beautifully to 12x18 size. At least. So I'm sure the K5 will as well. I deliver mainly digitally so I haven't had a chance to print from the jobs I have used it for in the past few weeks. But I could even pull 20x30s from my K10D so I'm sure there'll be no worries on the prints from the K5.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback, its been very helpful indeed. I think its time to bite the bullet and make a purchase. K5 and fast lenses i think. Ive been using Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 on my Nikon D300 and im pleased with the results so i think perhaps that is the way to go. Im not too clued up on current Pentax lenses so feedback would be good there too.

Thanks guys

Get the 17-50 Sigma

I would upgrade and get the Sigma 17-50 2.8 for starters. It is a killer lens. It actually performs better than my DA*16-50. It focuses fast on the K-5 and is very accurate. Check out photozone.de for its review. Also think about getting some primes too. I really like my Sigma 85 1.4. I'm thinking about getting a 31 1.8 as well. Take care,

Eric

There are a few options, the Sigma 17-50 being one of them for wide-normal zoom, but also Tamron 17-50 (louder AF) and the Pentax DA* 16-50. For telezooms, get the Tamron 70-200 you know in the K-mount - it's a stellar lens, or if you want silent focusing, there is also the Sigma 70-200 HSM in K-mount. For DoF control, you could also incorporate an FA 43 f/1.9 or FA 77 f/1.8 or as mentioned a Sigma 85/1.4. Pentax also has an FA* 85/1.4, but has been discontinued and only available serendipitously in marketplaces such as on this forum.

The biggest issue IMHO with using the K-5 for weddings is the ongoing pTTL overexposure issue.

I couldn't agree more. I have switched to manual flash or the A mode on my Metz until there is hopefully a firmware update...

This seems to be a big problem regarding the flash. The Nikon system flash is (in my opinion) one of the best around right now. It will take some trial & error before going live on a wedding, after all, a wedding is a once only chance so cant afford to get things wrong.

The best thing to do though is under expose surely, just means we have to use our skills other than rely on what has become a very automated way of creating images!!

Actaully its pretty easy once you know how your flash acts with your camera and know what FEC setting's to dial in.

It proved very consistent with the wedding I did in April.
