What would you do ?

I bought a K-5 10 days ago with a tamron 28-75. For approx $2000 Canadian.

I am thinking of returning them and buying the following for approximately the same
price.

K-R
Da* 55mm
12-24 sigma

My friend is selling both lenses to me for $1100 and the body I would purchase
from Henrys at retail price.

I'm curious to hear peoples opinions.

Some of the things that I am not happy with regarding the K-5 are
no live view with the Tammy and HDR froze my camera. Other then
that it has been flawless.

no live view with the Tammy
What does this mean?
There should be no difference in LV function between lenses.

As for what you should do - it's up to you to know whether you want a more advanced weather-sealed body and versatile f/2.8 zoom as opposed to a capable but unsealed entry-level body with wide angle zoom and fast portrait lens...

I am not sure but for some reason I can't focus on subject using LV with the Tamron lens.

Its a hard decision to make .. the k5 is so nice but the thought of collecting 2 more lenses........

I'm sure it can be worked out - all AF lenses should perform as normal in LV mode.
I have seen it work on my own K-5 with the very same lens.
And how will the two lenses change things for you? Do you need a wider than 28mm focal length for what you shoot? If so, I'd just save your pennies from now as the 28-75 is a very good focal range for general photography - the 12-24 isn't quite as versatile. I have both, and wouldn't be without either.

it's not a good idea for me !

1 : Having the DA*55mm make sense when the body is weather sealed, the K-r is not.

2 : the FA 50mm f1.7/1.4 is as good as the 55mm as long as you don't need weather sealing lense.

2*: the FA is far less expensive

3 : You have the K5 for 10 days, wait few more to know how to use it well, because i'm sure you didn't use it at its full capabilities

4: have you search on the web your Tammy / LV issue ? maybe it's just nothing, some wrong parameters ?
(edit : after some few research, it appears that this issue concern all brand including Canon and Nikon.)

5: How long have you wait after starting the HDR ? because it ask a lot of PP ressource for the body. You should do your HDR on a Computer, with either the Pentax software (wich process exactly like the body does) or some Photoshop / lightroom / aperture / else software.

Thank you for the replies !

I guess i'll forgo the deal ... keep using the manual 50 and
save up my penies for a 10-20.

The 12-24 will be way out of my price range if I keep the k-5.

Since ash mentioned that his Tamron is working with LV I should
return the copy I have and get a working copy.

Are you sure the lens is at fault? Is it working when focusing normally (without LV)? If so, there'll be more to it than a faulty lens. have it looked at by someone who knows.

As for the DA* 55, it is optically superior to the FA 50s, but indeed the weather sealing would not be practical on the K-r.

When using the viewfinder I have no problem with focusing.
It is only when I use LV.

This to me is unusual. Check your LV settings, then reengage AF in LV mode - the AF square should be trying to hone in on a focal point and at that stage run the lens's AF. If everything is happening except for the AF, then have your camera checked (it's less likely a lens problem).

I have a Tamron 70-200 f/.8, Tamron 90mm macr f/2.8 and a Tamron 18-200, all 3 lenses work perfectly on my K5 and Kx. Both on Live view and through the viewfinder. I also use the Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 and it also works great. Firmware version? Thde reason I ask about firmware, is I got my K5 3 weeks ago, and It had 1.01. I updated before I even took my 1st shot. Might be worth looking at. I would keep the K5, Just me.

I got this LV-focussing problem on my k5 and an "older" Sigma 70-200, you can send the Lens to Sigma to upgrade the Lens-Rom, then i should perform as supposed!

Don't go for it. However, HDR should not freeze your K-5 up. I've taken lots of HDR images with my K-5 without a glitch. Also, focusing should work just find in LV with the tammy. Maybe you've got a defunct K-5?

Why should this not be a good idea? As far as i know it solved some problems with other Lenses and LV on the K5/K-r's.
