K-5 Updates???

I will support Ash on this one, I have only one lens that has a purple fringe issue, and that is an older Sigma 28-70. I just have to be aware of what I am doing when I use it, My Tamron 70-200 and 90mm macro, along with Tammy 18-200 don't seem to have it. I though it might be a Sigma issue, but I also have an Sigma 135-400, and have not seen it there either. I guess I could go out and force all of them into it, but, It happens so little, and when I get home to look at what I have, I realize I probably deserved that result.

Agreed, and no doubt the benefits of the K-5 are significantly more important than the missing auto-rotate feature. However, at the risk of sounding greedy, it just seems like something that could have been quite easily included.

Must be two versions of the K5 out there. I have no PF issues, even with the notorious Tamron 70-300 DI and Sigma 135-400 APO. No focus problems either.

I've been happy with my K5:
Purple fringe - haven't noticed it

FF in dim tungsten light - well all lenses FF a little in tungsten light. I bought K5 in Feb 2011 and installed 1.3. haven't noticed any focus performance changes from my K20.

Pttl issues: I've tested mine for bounced and straight ahead in a pitch black bathroom with no windows. There was some difference, less than 1/2 ev in any case, but it seemed to me within tolerances and due in part to differences in light reflectivity of the walls and ceiling. One bad overexposure occurred when i inadvertently left the iso on 12,800, but then i wouldn't expect to routinely use flash with high iso.

I wish all manufacturers would slow down and take more time to deal with the issues before initial delivery. D7000 and 7D also had "new camera" problems.

Like I said, I think it is pure me,
Pttl issues, also none, I am using the Sigma 530 Super, and it works geat.

2 week ago i bought the k5 and i ask about problems with the sensor and front focus
The boy from the shop (local Pentax importer) said that the first 2 lots had problems but they revised the camera and is almost a new one.
My camera was build on 01.03 and it came with fw 1.1 (???) serial 40xxx and i dont find any problem (yet)

recently acquired a minty D200. downloaded nikon capture nx2 just for giggles....and guess what? their auto-purple fringe removal is really easy. even with my pentax jpgs. (of course it won't process my raw files, or will it with DNG? i should try this out tonight!) it's not a very expensive purchase, so if purple fringing is really bothering you, check 'em out. i found that capture nx2 is great for adjusting other things too (like correcting leveling of a photo by drawing a line). it's not too much $.....of course this is my experience :P

holy smokes. that is crazy fringing going on. have you experienced this with other lenses? is it isolated to your specific body?

That was an extreme situation, shot straight into the reflections of a low sun with lots of blown areas. So the blown areas aren't just bright light, its pretty much THE sun. That is by far the worst example I have. (The picture is of course a 100% crop, but still...)

Normally it's not a problem.

Gimbal's photo is an extreme example... I've never been able to get a shot that bad with my K-5.

Just from my opinion: don't worry a bit about fringing. Like others have said, it can be corrected in Camera (with pentax lenses) or in PP. However, I've never once had to do either of those measures; K-5 delivers spectacularly.

Fringing is mostly lens issue. Did you shoot it stopped down? It looks like it's a crop too.
Since you were shooting into sun reflections, the contrast difference was so high you ended up with lots of fringing. There's nothing new there.

I get fringing pretty often with the FA 77 and FA 31. FA 43 seems to control it a little better.

Gimbal, what is your PF correction technique? I'm aware of the Hue/Saturation method as well as the Replace Color method. I find that, with either of these, I need to break out the history brush to bring back some inappropriately corrected areas.

Any lens or camera will PF in that situation. My DA*200, which is a stellar lens, will give PF like this when I shoot a dark subject backlit by extreme sun, just like your shot.

Your shot is not an indictment of the K5, it's an indictment of the composition of the shot.
