You are wise to get something that reaches to 300mm. I take a lot of soccer pics and the 200mm was just not enough for many shots. I've had much better success with my 300mm. Now that I have my K-5 I am expecting to get another significant improvement in my capabilities.

See I figured I wouldn't get a 400mm because I'm not taking life sized photos of the players hahaha

I've been using my Tamron's for sports with the K5. The 28-75 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8. I had a 55-300 but got rid of it. There was a time that I thought I needed more when in fact I needed less.

For as much as I love the 70-200, I've been using my 28-75 for an all arounder. Here are some panning shots I took this weekend with the 28-75

and some from the 70-200....more reach then I'll need

Edit:
Just saw the part that said "cheap"....I bought both lenses used. I think I paid about 300 for the 28-75 and about 625-700 for the 70-200. Both were worth every penny.

The images are from 2 Tamrons. The 28-75 and the 70-200. The panning shots are from the 28-75. The only problem with the longer range(s) is that it isolates the subject. That technique works well with the soccer image above but when you want to include the visuals of the experience you need a wider angle to see what is going on around the subject.

I take a lot of soccer and wrestling images as well. The soccer shots are always with my 70-200 and anything indoors is usually with my 28-75. Hope that helps

#1 & #3 are superb shots and great examples of paning.
