Noise reduction settings

Just curious as to what noise reduction settings people use on their K-5. Do you use the custom setting and turn up the NR for higher ISO?

I know this probably won't be helpful. but camera's suck at high ISO noise management.
And so my approach is to turn everything OFF, shoot in RAW and deal with noise in Post.

But that's just me

I agree with John on that one.

Hi sebberry,

I'm a jpg shooter. With the K-5 I turn high ISO NR off, and set Sharpness to -4, leaving the other image parameters at 0.

I use Topaz Denoise to deal with noise and Topaz InFocus's deconvolution and micro contrast to sharpen in post.

I can normally shoot up to ISO 10,000 without much concern with these settings. Of course, YMMV as to what's acceptable.

Personally, I've found that the K5 NR is not worth doing.
It actually looks better w/o NR (ie. all NR off)
With NR, the really fine grain of the noise out of the K5 is 'corrupted' and NR artifacts creep in.
That is not saying that its bad. In fact the NR is probably on par with the competition.
Its just that NR off turns out to be better (than the competition)

That's exactly my approach too, so looks like it's not just you.

That's the way to work in RAW

Thanks guys.

Now to test the high-ISO performance, can I simply shoot a photo in TAV mode, and dial in say -3 exposure comp then push up the exposure in photoshop?

What's the best way to test out the high ISO capabilities of this?

And I'm assuming NR isn't applied to the RAW file when enabled, just the JPG?

I'm a bit new to higher ISO shooting since my K10D was almost useless over 400.

I don't worry about noise up to iso 3200 with the k-5, and since I'm lazy when it comes to PP, I keep NR on auto. High is usually too much, so it's either auto or off AFAIAC.

Same here, I remove Noise post production. I am hoping this will give my camera less wotk to do between shots and conserve some battery power too.

Does it NR only apply to jpg? I tried to shoot at iso range from 1600 to 12800 now, with raw+jpg. One set with NR on auto and another set with NR off. To be honest I did not see any noticeable difference on the raw files. The jpg's had a difference, but hardly anything dramatic.
