My experience shooting nightclub photography of flamenco dancers is that the K5 is two stops over the K7/K20D. In other words, a K5 photograph shot at 12800 has much the same noise as the other two shot at 3200.

Chaos_Realm, Easy mate. Total satisfaction is just a camera body away.
p.s not getting rid of the K7 either, she is a keeper with a high buffer clearing speed and no highlight clipping and no loose lens release buttons.

I think you are pretty much on target there, given the same lighting and circumstances. Here is one un-processed, just downsized I shot this evening at 12,800...it would process just fine no doubt. The Raw, even better.

I am not posting Squirrels to irritate any possible "Squirrel Harters" ....I am a damn Squirrel Shooter....have been since way back when......I shoot them because I am a Squirrel Shooter...like nude shooters shoot nudes......I would do that instead, and no one would complain, but Mrs Rupert won't let me. She doesn't mind the Squirrels, as long as I keep them out of the house......
Regards!

Jpeg straight from the camera, just downsized....
1/250 F9 @ 310mm ISO 12,800 - The ISO let me stop down and get some speed too.

Some minimal processing from the Raw file....plenty good for me!

That pretty much sums it up. At that ISO there will be some noise no matter what, it will not be bad though.

I would put it at closer to 3 stops over the K20D, but I won't argue the toss

Better solution. Get a Pentax K 50mm F/1.2 now (done this, just bought the recent one in the marketplace about 12 hours ago) then wait for next gen K-(#) If I like it I'll get that if I don't then buy the K-5.. what better low light set up could you get!

Surely you don't buy a 1.2 to make up for the lack of high ISO performance but to get those lovely shallow DOF bokeh shots?

For the 50 1.2 It's a combination of DOF, Lowlight, Sharpness and as you stated bokeh. I have the FA77 but its a touch too long in some situations.

Low light?
Need ISO12800?
Got K-5? Then no problems!

50 is too long in some scenarios as well due to the 1.5 factor of APS-C

Failing a FF Pentax body, I really wish someone would make a 30mm f/1.2. I love my Sigma 30/1.4, but it's completely different to my A 50/1.2 in terms of vibe

You are certainly right on the money about 50 being to long I almost bought the sig 30/1.4 about a month ago. (the handbrake was there to stop me though)
