K5 Warranty

Hi all,

I'm about to pull the trigger on a K5. It comes with a 2 year Pentax Canada warranty.

Is this sufficient or should I spring for another $160 bucks or so and get the extended warranty?

Seems to me 7 years is overkill and the camera will be obsolete long before the warranty runs out.

Thoughts?

2 years should be more than enough- chances are that you will have upgrade well before the warranty period ends

i have not had a camera more than a year, so 2 years is more than enough... the only thing to think about it moisture damage/accidental damage, some extended ones will give you a new camera if you accidentally break it.

also check your credit card policy, sometimes they extend the manufacturers warranty by X2, (in which case you'd have 4 years) most people have it but don't know about it (mine costs 35 a year for everything i purchase) its a master card from canadian tire... worth it in my opinion (and i get canadian tire money on the purchase...

Most Americans buy them with 1 year warranty. 2 should be fine, even in Canada :-)

It's always seemed to me that the extended warranty makes no sense statistically. Why do they offer it? Because they care about you and want you to be protected against loss? I don't think so, I think they offer it because they make money on it. Nothing wrong with that, but the fact that they make money on it means that the odds are against you. I think it's as simple as that.

Thanks guys,

You've confirmed my belief that a 2 year warranty is enough. It's all I had with my K10 which continues to work flawlessly after almost five years now. I hope the K5 works as well. I'll put the extra cash towards a battery grip or a Katzeye focusing screen as I do a lot of manual shooting with K and M series lenses.
