Pentax K5 Featured on New York Times Tech Frontpage - Good Job Ricoh!

NOTE: This is not a cookie based tracker ad because I have been visiting Pentax related sites on my PC. I tried this on browsers on my PC with no Pentax history, in VMs on my PC with no Pentax history and on other PCs of my friends that don't have anything to do with Pentax.

Here's the Ad that's been showing up all day on New York Times today, safe to say the advertising dollars are being put to right use.

Ricoh means business! A very encouraging sign, indeed.

Adam, perhaps a mention on the frontpage that Ricoh does indeed mean business ? or an encouraging sign ?

Sites like the NY Times probably use behavioral tracking - cookies track the websites you've been to and then serve ads based your implied interests. So if you go to Honda.com and then go to the NYTimes don't be surprised to see a Honda ad.

Still, kudos to Pentax to be using behavioral tracking on the NY Times. I doubt that Ricoh had any input, more likely, Pentax's new agency did.

This is not behavioral tracking, check the Note in the OP

Interesting. I just went to NY Times tech page and it showed me the same Pentax ads.

Looks like it might be using Adbrite.
adBrite - Open architecture

So I wouldn't put off totally the idea of targeting by something more advanced than cookies (like IP tracking), but it really does look like they are specifically buying ad time on the site more than anything else happening.

I get a different ad now too, probably because the day changed.

This is the best news I've seen in awhile. Good on them, if they step up this kind of advertising it will really help the brand, and us.

This should be the lead-in to some major marketing in USA. What's important is, will it show results? I just read an ad agency veteran and marketing researcher say that marketers usually know of an ad's effectiveness within three weeks. So let's see how this evolves over a few monthly cycles. Hay, it's tons more than Hoya ever did! And Pentax grew its market share during the Hoya years even without decent marketing. Pentax is about to erupt! Stand back!

the next 6 weeks should see a lot of Pentax ads if things are indeed changing. a good 30-40% of Camera related sales happen between now and christmas (well Jan 1st allowing for post christmas sales)
this is promising for those of you in the US though as it does seem to signal some changes.
