Sigma lenses help please

G'day all just joined

I am about to buy my first ever DSLR camera and am considering 2 Sigma lenses mainly for Astrophotography:-

8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM for wideview
17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM for general purposes

Any comments/advice on these lenses please.

Bob J

You can read about the sigma in our in-depth review- it's a nice lens (better than the Pentax counterpart...)

Not sure about the 8-16mm:

Perhaps a slightly less wide lens would be better unless you really need the 8mm.

The Sigma 8-16 has surprisingly little chromatic aberration for a wide angle lens, which is nice for the stars. Not really many other options that I know of if you're going to use the wide end of that lens. The corners and edges aren't as sharp as I would like, but that's probably true of most ultra wide lenses. I have a few night timelapse videos on vimeo if you want to get a feel for the lens, I think they were all taken with the Sigma 8-16.

edit: wow, I didn't know it would auto-link a vimeo clip, that's pretty cool
