K5 iso 80

The K-5 sensor is truly amazing at DR and shadow detail, especially at ISO 80. When you really start exploring it's potential, it's literally a game changer. So much of my approach to shooting and what I consider correct exposure captures has changed.

I tend to be somewhat disappointed in how little highlights can be brought back. I will under expose my shots just a bit if questionable to keep the highlights from blowing out because I know I can easily bring back the shadows.
Its a nice camera.

I wouldn't underexpose by several stop for a real photo though just for a test

With the K5 you can indeed underexpose a bit like you said to be at the safe side but if you've the time exposing to the right still yield more details and actually a greater dynamic range.

Yup, my experience too, the rule with the K-5 is never ever over exposure. The DR is in the shadows, not the highlights.

The DR in K5 begs me to buy an ND filter, and my wallet is already pretty thin from K5

oh I also love the timer pentax added on bulb mode on the top lcd, don't think that existed before on the K10

Timer on bulb mode? Hmmm ... just played with bulb mode on my K-5 and didn't see a timer. So then I went through the menus to see if it is something I have to turn on ... no luck. I am planning to do some 'painting with light' shooting in the middle of the night with long exposures and this sounds handy. Any tips on how to find this on the K-5?

You need to enable EXPANDED ISO function in the menu. That will give you ISO80 to 51200.
