Turn AF Off on Shutter Release?

Does anyone know if you can, and how, to turn the AF off of the shutter release so one uses only the AF button on the back?

That way you can focus, and then the focus will stay where it is when you push shutter release. Good if something come into the frame as your shooting and the camera doesn't refocus.

button customization under the camera5 (red) menu page. set af button to enable af and shutter button half press to off

Page 285-286 of the user manual has the instructions on turning off or enabling the AF when you half press the shutter button. Once you've done that, you'll probably want to know how to set up the back AF button to AF; page 285-286 or pp124-125 will have what you need.

It's amazing how much information the user manual has...

Yes, but it's a mission to find something

It's the reason why I have electronic copies on my computers; easier to search

While you can turn off AF with shutter half press you might not have to: with AFS keeping the dedicated AF button pressed will keep the focus locked regardless of half-pressing the shutter button even if it is set to AF as it is by default.

Thanks everyone, I found it where you said. Holding the AF button to stop the shutter release from activating is right on. My only complaint about using the AF button is that when looking through the viewfiner, my thumb on the AF button gets in the way of my face and makes it hard to look throughout he viewfinder,
