So K-5 is here... make me love it!

The thread is obviously a little premature and it is probably just my own sick buyer's remorse. I went through this getting a HD Television until a couple of years ago too... "Well, I buy this and what? I get to watch TV? I'm already doing that."

So I got home late last night and opened everything... and had the same feeling. "Oh dear. I can already take pictures..." Started reading through the manual and got a little more excited....

But what can/should I do to just totally fall in love with the K-5 over my K-7... what is gonna make me go "Wow! That was worth it!"

Have a look at the "exploring" sections and the k-7 comparison here, as there are quite a few differences:

For starters, try a couple of shots with high dynamic range and then try a few with high ISO settings. If you are still not convinced compare auto focus speed with your K7. If none of these convince you send it back!

My first two test shots.. (aside from opening up the box - exciting) are trying out iso-80 and iso-12800 (both are amazingly clean to me).

Update FW to 1.11 to begin with. Then slap on DA*60-250 and go shoot kids evening soccer game in AFC and high continuous drive. Oh and don`t forget ISO 8000 when light starts failing.
That is just for starters that come to mind.
Enjoy.

Better yet, if none convince you, send it to me for much appreciation! I'll even come pick it up.

Seriously, Ex Finn has the right of it.

Missed those exploring sections when I read the review... thanks.

I did set up my RAW button to go into bracketing mode -- so that's very cool (and fast).

Some things I hope change for the next one...

  • I wish the sync speed were 1/250 like Nikon/Canon.
  • I wish it would label groups of bracketed shots with a tag so you could pair them up again later.
  • I wish I could "Name" my user modes.

I take a pic of my hand, or something else obvious to show the beginning and end of a bracket series.

Other than that, I think the K-5 is probably the best APSC camera one can buy today. If it doesn't do the things you want it to do, just send it back.

Take a picture with your K-7 using your preferred settings of a scene with any kind of shadows.
Now take the same picture, same settings, with the K-5.
Compare the results.
If you prefer the output of the K-7, send the K-5 back.

Shoot in low light. That's the main thing the K-5 does better than the K-7.

If the bracketting is for HDR purposes, FDRTools can auto-group raw or JPEG/TIFF shots two ways:

1. Shots shot within 1-99s of each other (you set the max. time differential) are considered to be in the same group.

2. You set the group number, e.g 3, and it groups every 3 shots.

You can also easily move photos between bracketing groups if it gets it wrong.

It also automatically arranges the shots within a group in ascending EV order based on either Exif data or exposure analysis.

That's what I get for waiting for the movie!

I'm a cover to cover guy, so didn't get that far yet and didn't think to look it up before I spoke. Thanks!

Totally shocked that newer ones didn't come with upgraded firmware. I was on 1.01 still. On 1.11 now...thanks

The covers are a fair way apart though. I'm not sure that I have read every page!
Fortunately we have an index and the Forum. This is a great place to learn.
Enjoy the K5.
