The K5 is quiet, very quiet compared to my Kx!

I got my K5 yesterday and had to leave while waiting for the battery to charge, but when I got back I decided it was time for some fun! I noticed one thing when compared to my Kx, and that is the K5 is REALLY quiet! Id it that the K5 has a really quiet shutter, or is it that the Kx is simply really loud? What would make this kind of difference?

The weathersealed body has a lot more material in your camera and the tighter seals probably make a bit of difference.

it is just that the kx has very very loud auto focus and shutter sound...
i've tried a number of friends' nikon and canon, none of them are as loud as the kx.

Agreed... My brother has a t2i, and while it feels like a toy, its focus and shutter noise are significantly softer than my K-r. (It focuses faster, too, but that's another thread. ) Can anyone comment on the noise-dampening techniques involved? Are there just simple pads involved, or is it more sophisticated than this?

My K10D sounds like a machine gun compared to my K-5. The newer models are much quieter.

It's partially due to the faster mirror, I think, since the FPS is higher.

Yes, the K-5 shoots as quiet as the flutter of butterfly wings, even at fast fps. It has been a very pleasant experience. The K-x is certainly more noisy.

I did have the shutter noise scare the crap out of a squirrel I snuck up on before. Maybe this will change for me!

the funny thing is i got my first pentax (k-x) because i like the loud shutter, it gives me a nice high tech mechanical feeling.
(none of the other camera i tested in B&H give me such loud noise)

and later i got quite annoy to use it on quiet enviornment that i am so stand out and people looking at me weird.
and i finally sum up getting the k5.

Oh my yes A couple of times at events, I had to stop shooting my K-x once the performance started because people were shooting dirty looks every time I fired the shutter ;D Thank goodness I wasn't doing any weddings at that time :P With the K-5 I'm a bit smug when people ask me, "Oh, is your shutter in quiet mode?" "Nope. It's always this quiet." Smugness is a sad sad emotion....but I indulge once in a while

My K10D has been compared to Kalashnikov many times, it certainly has that robust sound though.
The Kx sounds a bit more delicate and the k5 is simply quiet, don't get much emotion from that one.

Perhaps it is just me but my K-r seemed quieter than my K-x. The K5 is clearly almost silent in comparison. It's made a difference in taking candids with my children and other people. One of the unsung but seriously nice pluses of going to the K5 in my book.

My hearing is finally returning after using a K100d for a couple years. However, though the K-5 seemed quiet in comparison when new, I now wish it was quieter...
