Off brand charger

Does anybody have any experience with the off brand quick battery chargers for the D-Li90 batteries? Amazon has a Wasabi brand charger that is 110/12v and is supposed to be a quick charger. The price is only $14. I have 3 Pentax batteries for my K5 with grip and would love to be able to charge in my vehicle and charge faster than the factory charger but I don't want to damage my batteries either.

I just bought the Wasabi charger with 2 wasabi batteries but have not had the chance to charge the OEM battery with it. Seems to work well with the Wasabi batteries though.

In any case, quick charging a battery will, I believe, decrease the amount of the full charge and thereby decrease the actual time the battery stays charged. It is best to slow charge the battery, you get more life from it.

I don't trust third party chargers or batteries based on my very distant experience. Sorry for not much help. Li-ion can't be overcharged though or it will burn.

i've had the wasabi + two batteries "kit" for over 6 months now. i've been charging pentax and wasabi batteries in it and haven't had any issues. the price was right and the extra batteries have really come in handy.

Thanks for the replies. If I buy the charger, I'll only use it when I'm traveling or need a quick charge. My main charger will still be the Pentax charger.

I got the Adorama charger for Christmas ($7 from amazon) and have had not problems with the batteries in the past 2 weeks. Short timeframe but so far, so good.

i checked the output of my wasabi charger, and i wouldn't consider it a "fast" charger. the stock charger's output is 8.4v and 400ma. the wasabi is 8.4v and 500ma. mind you, i'm just going off of what's on the labels on both chargers; i didn't actually measure the output of each charger.

I'm just going by the description. It says "Mini rapid charger fully charges the battery in approximately 60-90 minutes." Have you timed how long it takes to charge your battery?

Mine from Adorama has generally been done in about 90 minutes - which is faster than the Pentax stock charger. It has the added advantages of having folding prongs and a car charger adapter that comes with it.

I haven't used the charger mentioned but I have used 'ebay' chargers for both my previous Pentax K20 & my Nikon D80. I've used a new 'ebay' charger for my K-5 batteries and everything seems to be OK.

None of my chargers were or are 'quick' chargers as far as I know. I prefer to 'slow' charge my batteries.
