Why I still love Pentax

Just a short post. As anyone living in the Pacific Northwest knows, we've been slammed by one storm after another this week and it's still raining/sleeting/snowing/blowing. But this morning I felt the urge to get out and shoot photos in the woods outside the house.

An hour later I came in, soaked, with my K-5 and 16-50/2.8 and a card full of pictures. The camera and lens were dripping wet, too.

And then it hit me: For all the frustration with autofocus, and all the wondering whether I would really, truly be ever so much happier with a D700 or 5D Mark II, I would never have taken either one of those cameras out in that downpour, not for even 10 minutes. But I never thought about it with the K-5. Didn't even wipe it off. Just set it down on the kitchen counter, when I came back in, to dry.

I'd like to join in with a little more humorous reason:

Why I still love Pentax:
My white k-x is the loveliest looking camera I have ever seen.

Btw, I really want a k-5 after reading your reason!

Quiet, you. You'll spoil the "sky is falling" mentality around here.

Great post, this is what is all about . Going out and take picture. Many here are just looking at the next machine but they will never be happy because is not what they want. In the meantime you took picture and took time to get the best of it.

Yup, been doing the same this week! I don't have a WR lens, but it's easy enough to protect the lens - and not worry about water/sleet/snow flakes hitting the buttons, LCD, e-dials.....love it

Now that we're dealing with the post-snow-flooding, the photography has gotten a lot less interesting though

Yes, no FF, no new APS-C, but there is a rumor about a new APS-C MILC, but that's not the FF we were waiting for, nor the APS-C camera we wanted, because... (insert reasons X, Y, Z). There are not enough lenses, this or that thing is not good... Pentax resembles Babu in a Seinfeld episode:

Nice, you got pretty close considering that you had 16-50mm lens....or is this a crop, then? But what about that vignetting - did you add that in PP?

I love my K5 because it works - the only failures have been my own. I've left the WB on tungsten, I've forgotten to change aperture or shutter speed, I've forgotten to change from single shot to multiple and vice versa. I've left a filter on when I didn't want a filter and neglected to add one when it would have been helpful. I have taken it out in bad weather without it failing. I just don't understand why so many people complain about these cameras.

Yes, I added the vignetting in PP. Kind of a self indulgence, I guess, but I like the look.

The photo isn't cropped.

The deer here are pretty calm, but especially so -- as wild animals often are -- in bad weather. It takes too much energy to run away unless they're sure you constitute a threat. So I just hung out in the rain for a while and watched her eat until I apparently blended into the forest.

It's the DA* 16-50/2.8.
