The prompt has to do with SR and a lens that doesn't communicate it's focal length. If SR is off, you don't get the prompt. If you put on a FA lens, you don't get the prompt.

It is cleared if you touch the shutter button.

If it isn't a mis setting, I'd suspect some faulty electronics.

Did you try to do a custom function reset?

Tried that

Does the hand icon show up in the viewfinder to indicate SR is on?

I've just looked. Not immediately. I have to lightly touch the shutter button first.

Is that normal?

Do you have a grip with a button pushed or a cable release attached and switched on ?
Something is preventing you to enter the focal length... A pushed button perhaps.

No grip, No cables.

I can enter the FL. But I have to go through the menu to do it. There isn't a prompt.

I think that's the conclusion I've come to. I'll wait for a response from Pentax Uk first.

Thinking back to the first time I tried a couple of manual lenses all of the exif data read that they were taken with a 35mm manual lens: the setting the camera was on straight from Pentax.

So, except for the one occasion a few weeks back, it has never had the prompt come up.

Send ing it back is a bit of a pain. Not only will I be without it for a few weeks I'm going to have to put back the original screen and shim first.

JimD,
I think you have the newest firmware.
My K5 had came back from service. They changed main pcb and AF block,, also updated the latest firmware.
My camera now behaves strangely. No input of focal length as yours. and still no solution.

Also I cannot switch to selective AF point, whatever I do, very annoying.

I decided to go through systematically - and during LV, I was able to select the AF focus point. and from here also able to select AF focus point in optical view finder, which had been impossible before.
I know the K5.

Just want to know if any of you have the same problem.

Edit: swapped several lenses, now seem able to input focal length. Don't know how it just work now.

Regarding AF selection,
I think the mount and the lens might cause the problem here. If an AF lens does not give good enough electrical contact, AF point selection is not possible, even the lens still AF fine.
By moving the lens while it is attached a bit, AF point selection is back. I need to check for other lenses.

Jimd: yes that's normal, but it does show up. That tells us that SR is enabled. I would suggest that there is a problem with the unit.

What happens with your EXIF data now?

Have you tried a reset? Is this the only problem that you have? If it is, I seriously doubt that is a defect. Like I said, mine did that 2-3 times, but I sometimes change lenses all day long. I am pretty sure that it was a sequencing issue. Maybe I left it on when I pulled the lens - I don't remember.

If I were you I would do a reset and reinstall the latest firmware before I send it in. Just saying...

Done all of that.

The exif data shows the correct FL if I've entered it via the menu. As there isn't a prompt, if I were to forget to enter it, the data would indicate the last FL I had entered.

I've had the camera just over 9 months and except for one occasion a few weeks back it has never displayed the prompt. So I didn't know that it was usual to. Hence my original posting.

I'm not holding my breath for a reply from Pentax UK in the near future. They were appallingly slow to respond to a simple question this time last year, before I bought the K5.

I spoke to the main dealer I got it from. He came up with all of the same suggestions you guys have. I'm taking it in to him today but he reckons it's almost certainly got to go back to Pentax.

A 100 mile round trip in the snow but it now appears to be working. The guy at the dealer's I'd spoken to previously was their Pentax specialist, but wasn't in. The one I saw was very helpful but he was their Nikon specialist and didn't really understand what the camera was supposed to do.

He kept changing settings without any real strategy. He kept trying the different M lenses I had and rubbed the terminals with his fingers on the odd occasion.

He then said 'is this what you mean?' And there was the prompt. We then switched it on and off a few times, changed the settings a few times and changed the various lenses a few times and each time the prompt came up.

He didn't really know what he'd done or why it suddenly started working, which is a bit frustrating. May be he was a bit more aggressive rubbing the connections than me or pushed an obscure combination of settings or it was the constant swapping of lenses over a short period that triggered it off. Who knows!

He did record it and offered to send it back to Pentax if it shows the slightest sign of the issue re-occurring. So not a lot else he could do and at least I'm not without a camera at the moment.

Perhaps when I eventually hear from Pentax UK I may know more.

Nice that is working for you. I did clean scrub the mounts and the input was back.

Glad you guys got your cameras sorted. Maybe it is the contacts more than anything?

Send it in; no use having a unit with problems. If the underlaying cause of the problem gets worse, you might get other symptoms. And that will obviously happen when it's out of warranty.
