Why K5 price drop like a rock?

K5 only been on the market for 1 year. The online price dropped from $1599 to $879! Sad for us k5 owners.

Any place you find it for $879 has got to be a scam dealer. Actual price right now from a reputable authorized dealer is $1199. I think the lowest "real price" it has been was CyberMonday price of $999.

Just how things work in the world of electronics these days. Last March I bought a just released Sony LCD TV for the list price of $2999 - Today you can get if for $2094 at Amazon and even less other places.

My K-5 is worth every bit of the $1200 I paid for it last fall IMO, so no regrets for this K-5 owner.

True. There are always scamsters out there, the problem is that Google and the price tracking sites often make no distinction thereby misleading many.

Why sad? Just means they sell more cameras and there are more k-5 owners. Early adopters always pay more for electronics, just the way it is. You would think, logically, that early adopters should get a discount, for taking the risk on a new product and getting the early units off the manufacturing line with usually more issues than later ones. But it doesn't work that way.

They made enough of a profit on it at the original MSRP that dropping the price is not only affordable, but it will also get more people to buy the camera

The value of something is not always what you can sell it for. I'm sure when I go to trade in my K20D, they'll offer me about $200 for it. But I've been using it for 4 years. Really, I'll be happy if they give me anything for it. And I just hope they'll sell it cheap to someone who will enjoy it as much as I have.

Happy with mine, more people will buy one at lower price and I am not selling before any time soon.

Hey even with that drop you mean to say my K-5 has only cost me $45/month (Actually in the UK the body only has gone from £999 to £695 so that's just £20/month since Nov 2010).

Did it ever really sell for $1599? I think Nikon priced the D7000 at $1200 (which shocked most everybody) and Pentax followed-up with an immediate price reduction, but I could have my timeline messed up.

Pretty much every digital camera ever has followed this trajectory, too.

The legitimate sellers (Amazon-- direct not through a reseller, BH, etc.) all seem to be selling the K-5 for about 1199. I call troll.

Good attitude, I feel pretty much the same way. I've even given away some of my older gear to aspiring photographers. Cameras are meant to be used not sitting on shelves

I bought mine from AJ Richies (pretty good dealer IMO) for $879 (body only). They also have the lowest prices I can find for Pentax lenses, although not the best selection.

Lucky you, that seller has some really bad reviews that mostly focus on bait & switch and intense upsell problems.
