That may well be true, and a good method. But folks my age used to a real viewfinder for 50 years hate using LCD screens.
It's more than being used to a real viewfinder. If you wear variable-focus eyeglasses (think bifocals) as I do, one gets a very sore neck with the constant bending back of one's head to be able to focus on the live view screen.

Yes! Why Not?

And you know what I'll miss is the depth of field preview. Appreciate all the input.
No, you won't miss it. The K-5 has a very nice DOF preview function: it's integrated in the on-off switch: Just turn it from off to on, and then one notch further enables the DOF preview. When released, it springs back into the normal on-position.
You just have to be sure to set the preview mode to 'optical preview' (Menu>Record 5>Button Customization>Preview Dial), otherwise you get a digital preview on the lcd screen.

Yes, just saw this function at local camera store. Wanted to hold a K-5 in my hands. Will still go for the deal at Adorama.

The deed is done. New K-5 & DA 55-300 on its way. Thanks for the encouragement, I don't know how many times I've talked myself out of getting a dslr. I'm glad I didn't settle for a bundled Canon Rebel!

One more step for manual lenses, change a menu setting:
Hit the menu button and select the "C" tab, and menu 4. Item 27 is "Using Aperture Ring" - Change this to "Permitted"

Then try the lens on manual again.

EXCELLENT! Thank you for the quick response. I just picked this camera up after using Micro 4/3 for the past year and I must say it is a very welcomed upgrade. This Body is an absolute joy to handle.

Cheers

Unless your lens is an "A" lens you should see "F--". K- and M-lenses have no electrical conytacts to communicate their aperture setting to the camera body. By the way: Did you remember to set Custom Steeing no. 27, "Using Aperture Ring" to "Permitted"? You say you have set to manual; does that include: The camera to manual mode "M"? and the focus to manual focus "MF"?

I did have everything set to manual but did not change Aperture to permitted. That did the trick! Thanks for the response. Now how do I get one of those proud owner of signatures?

Cheers

They have some pretty good deals on lenses right now. A DA*300 F4 for $1129. Almost bought it then remembered that we are doing some flooring in the kitchen. What are my priorities???
