Metz 58 AF-2 with Pentax K5

Hi guys,

I recently bought the Metz 58 AF-2; this is my first experience using external flash.

I've tried it on and off the camera, with and without the sto-fen diffuser but my results are always awful!

The subject is sometimes way too white, and sometimes not lit at all. I've pointed the flash in all directions!

The WB is set to flash. What settings should I use and what am I doing wrong??

Your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Could you post some photos and give us some details (EXIF info would be great) so we may help you out better?
Improperly exposed photos lit with flash could be for any number of reasons; flash to subject distance, aperture settings, flash power settings, ISO settings, etc...

I don't like to ask this because I assume you already know this but did you purchase the 58 AF-2 in the Pentax version?

It's one of those questions that you're never sure how to ask without offending the person.

Can you take a few more photos and post them here with all the information intact.

That way, we can have a look and maybe come up with some solutions.

Right, well without seeing some images we can hardly tell you what could have gone wrong with the exposure. Try putting your camera in Program Mode (That's P in the mode dial), set the flash to P-TTL mode with the Auto zoom feature activated and shoot a few frames to see if you have over/under exposure issues.

As great and automatic as these new smart flashes are, there are about a thousand ways to get screwed up shots using a flash... I would suggest a thorough reading of the manual and set everything to auto and then shoot a person in a living room straight on i.e. no macro or landscapes or bouncing or difusers etc. !

Try putting the camera in M (manual) mode. Set the shutter speed to 125, with aperture somewhere between f 4.0 and 8.0. ISO should be around iso 400 to 1600.

Make sure flash is in PTTL mode. Put flash straight ahead, making sure you have at least 4 feet between you and the subject. Try a shot. Now bounce the flash off the ceiling or side wall but adjust the FEC to -1 (check your manual to see what this is if you don't know). My guess is that it should work.

Some difficulty if you have it in auto ISO mode - you can easily generate too much light (because the flash can only go so low) if its at too high ISO. This will blow out the pict.

Hi problem solved.
Thanks for all your help.
It simply was me being on totally the wrong settings, which I've now sorted.

Thanks!

A (automatic)
Camera is set to normal flash.
Sometimes images are a little washed out though.
Also auto ISO stays at ISO 1000

I don't really recommend those settings, ISO 1000? Not a good idea, unless you really need ISO that high because the flash can't light up the subject enough. I would lower the ISO. Even with the K-5's awesome ISO performance I always shoot at the lowest ISO I can.

I didn't want ISO 1000, it just happens when put into auto

I know, I'm just saying you need to disable auto ISO

ollie31770--On your K5 look on your rear LCD and if the ISO status says "ISO AUTO" press in the ISO button near your pwr switch to select/highlight ISO parameter. Use your rear e-dial to change to a fixed ISO ---pick 400-- to start just for practice.
