How to make sense of the DOF preview/Optical preview on the on/off dial ?

Most of the times I see the same thing as through the viewfinder after focussing and all the screens just turn off. Is it just supposed to show me this or something else ? I don't get what's the use of this. I primarily use Av mode.

It's to check the dof like it says. It does this by stopping down the lens as said above. Try it yourself, use your 1.4 lens for max effect. Set lens at 1.4 focus on something something close that would give you some boken, use the dof (nothing should happen), change it to f/8 use dof, more things should be in focus, change to f/22 and everything should be in focus. It's a good way to see whats in focus or not before taking the shot

If you have your aperture set smaller by a few stops than the maximum on your lens, you should see the viewfinder darken a bit as it stops down the lens. If it doesn't, something may be wrong.

I use it to check my various mounts and aperture levers.

You're correct, but to be able to do so you need to go to custom settings and change settings to optical preview. Than it will stop down the lens, your view in viewfinder will get darker and will show you correct Depth of Field.
Personaly to use this as a DOF meter you need very bright light, otherwise it is almost useless when stopped down. But I find it very convenient for exposure metering with manual lenses...
