Awful purple fringing? [K5+FA77]

I experienced something that has never happened to me in the past and I wonder what was the cause of it. I took a few shots outside with my trusted K5+FA77 combo for portraiture and experienced severe purple fringing on the subject's ear.

It's really, really bad.
Taken with the K5 and FA77 at ISO100, f/2.2, 1/500s

1. Unedited, original RAW->JPEG conversion, no PP

2. 200% crop on the ear

The final edit was still pleasing and not all too hard to correct but I wonder why this happened?

You guys have any idea why the FA77 would do this? I experienced some fringing when wide open at f/1.8 but never this bad. How do I avoid this in the future?

It's because of the hot spot in the background. All lenses are like that pretty much, and the only way to prevent PF is to avoid overexposing parts of the image.

BTW, please send me a PM with your old username and old e-mail and I will merge your accounts. We do not allow multiple accounts on the forum.

But isn't the PF especially bad here? I've taken hundreds if not thousands of shots where the subject is in front of various hot spots but never got a full ear or other skin part to turn fully purple.

It was the amount that really concerned me. I was scared something was wrong with my FA77.

I think it's just because of the direction of the light rays in this particular scenario. I wouldn't worry too much about the lens

Old (and not-so-old) Greek saying: "Easy... No problem..."

Lightroom 4.1 should be able to correct your photo with one or two mouse clicks...

See: New Color Fringe Correction Controls

Cheers...

I JUST upgraded from LR3 to LR4.1 yesterday and haven't had time to digest all the new stuff. I ended up buying the Missing FAQ book to get back into LR more seriously since I've yet to establish a good, well thought out workflow with it even after all these years.

Thanks!

This is normal. You still have a lot PF though, on that tree knot above the subjects head and on both forearms

Only purple fringing? And only visible at a 200% crop...

Luxury!

You should try shooting a K300/4 Purple AND green fringing galore, visible even when viewed on the back of the camera. Luckily maxing out LR4's sliders reins it in, just.

LR4 defringing tool is indeed awesome.

PF probably exacerbated by the subjects horribly misshapen ears...

...just kidding. i figured that might be you in the pic.

The dude does have Spock-like ears

No it isn't me. I suck at self portraiture.

How about if you take the same shot using fill flash in HSS mode?
