They do that with K-5, but they did before with K-r, K-x and K-7. Leftover stock from older models when a new model is released has the tendency to stay on the shelf. So Pentax is smart in that way.
In fact they do the same at canikon too, but they don't announce it. all the old models you see cheap at costco etc are out of production, difference is canikon overproduces them with an eye to doing this, then devotes line time to the next cam, it lets them lower the average cost per unit due to the huge volume. this would be a disaster move for Pentax at the moment because they lack the sales velocity to do this kind of thing. a few years from now though and we may see the same type of marketing if market share increases enough
