New K5ii, old iPhoto 09

I just got my new Pentax K-5 II. Yippie!!

My old iPhoto 09 doesn't recognize the raw format. Boooo.

Can I update my iPhoto to be able to convert the K5ii files or do I have to buy the latest version?

No unfortunately. iPhoto '11 is what you'll need, just like each version of Photoshop you need to upgrade to get the latest RAW converters. But it's probably worth it with iPhoto '11 - good reasons to upgrade (iCloud included) and only for $16.99 (in Australia anyway).

Are you using PEF or DNG? iPhoto 09 should recognize DNG. Adobe has a DNG converter, just be sure to turn off Convert To Linear Image.

The K-5 II/IIs are not supported yet in the RAW compatibility update 4.01 from Oct. 24. I wouldn't be surprised to see support in the next version. I have the same issue - I'm waiting for support to be added in Capture One 7 right now.

For now you can use the Pentax DCU - it's actually useful, though probably not what you want in the long run:

Apple didn't add PEFsupport for the K-5 until Feb. 2011. That update was for iPhoto 11. But K-5 DNG files work just fine with iPhoto 09, and Aperture 2 for that matter. DNG is a "universal" RAW format, no need to wait for Apple to support PEF.

You could try RPP too.
