On a K-5 can someone please explain to me what the two settings in the D-Range Setting menu actually do?

Highlight correction and Shadow Correction

What actually happens when you use these functions?

It basically gives you in-camera shadow/highlight correction. Here are some example:

Shadow push the brigthness of the shadows up, highlight pulls the highlights down.

Shadows is just software, highlights is done by underexposing the photo and then brightening the photo by software.
So with highlight correction on for example, if you set the ISO at 200 it will take a photo at ISO100 and brighting everything with 1 stop except the highlights.

They do help but the shadow correction limits your minimum ISO by a stop (that how it works) which I'm not so keen on (often better off recording RAW and doing PP I think).

I think you mean highlight there or i've it wrong....

Last month I got my K5 (Yay christmas, and dream girlfriend!!) and I share the confusion... I've spent quite some time searching info on this issue, but am left with some confusion:

1) Shadow correction can be done PP- assumin one shoots RAW (?)
2) Highlight correction is a nifty feature that can save lots of PP, or maybe even not possible PP (?)
3) There is a trade-off: ISO 80, or highlight correction.

I only shoot RAW, and wonder if my conclusions 1 and 2 are correct. More importantly (for me, at least) is to know which considerations long time K5 users have re point 3... Is the benefit of highlight correction worth losing the extra ISO range? Would it be worth making a user mode for this? Can anyone point me to an article that elaborates on this issue?

As far as i know when you're shooting RAW there are no benefits.

there is afterall no extended DR but these features are a compressing the DR so they fit in JEPG space better.
RAW capture all the sensor has to offer afterall.
