Just wondering , what is the max size for a SD card in the K5 ..

32GB / 64GB / 128GB / 256GB

With the original firmware 32GB. Firmware 1.02 enabled SDXC so theoretically up to 2TB, but of course no one makes one bigger than 256GB yet.

But also consider... It is usually a bit more than just what the camera will be able to handle.

Consider any computer that the images will eventually be downloaded to. If one is stuck downloading to a physical platter hard drive of any size (even above one terabyte), that in downloading either the 256 or even the 128 you'll actually cause issues with the hard drive. Also imagine trying to defrag a hard drive after all of that data goes onto it. Plus even if one happens to have a SSD drive; most only come in either a 480gb or typically (for this point in time) 600gb capacities.

Thats ok , my computer will handle it just fine ... 256Gig even , but I was thinking 64Gig for a back up SD card since they are cheap enough ..

I will have to check what firmware version is on the K5 ...

Oh , I was not planning to ever fill a SD card ( the best laid plans ) , just wanted to know what the camera and my wallet can handle .. Thank you .

1.02 added SDXC, 1.13 fixed a specific problem with SDXC...

I encourage you not to only get one card for 'redundancy' reasons. If you have ever had a card corrupted, you know what I mean... not only do you lose the data on the card, you are done shooting until you can replace it. I always have 2 (now 3) 32GB cards with me.

Ordered a 2nd card for the camera ( back up card )

I can get almost 100 pictures on a 1GB card ( all I had at the time ) now I will have 2 x 16GB , so safely over 1000 pictures per card .. Though a larger card ( 64gb ) will be purchased ..

I updated to the latest firmware ... ( 1.14 )

Is the firmware issue why my 10 month old K5 will not keep the formatting on the two brand new 64gb sd cards I just bought?

I have a bunch of 16GB cards for just that reason. They can hold about 500 raw images, or 400 raw+JPEG, and that is already more than I'd like to lose in one go... And still sufficient to not having to change cards all the time.

Of course, if you are in the habit of taking long series of pictures every time you push the shutter button then forget what I just said

I would not buy such a large card - they do fail and you could lose too much data.

After hearing from a lot of folks on this forum I would now use nothing larger that a 32 - and have several on hand at any time and also use a card reader to download from because the camera jacks wear out - like mine has, when you keep plugging in the chord!

Oh, it should work. But I would never do it.

But a 16GB card is only 30 minutes of max. quality video on K-5... so it's only big enough in practice for those who stick to photos or low quality video. I always carry a couple of 32 GB cards with me, just in case.
