Once. TAv for sports and Hyper for everything else. I feel limited when I use Av.

When I'm doing something with 'enough' light, sometimes I put it in Av with the other dial set to ISO. So instead of auto-ISO I have it in auto-shutter, with the ISO I want and the depth of field I want.

I don't respect Green Mode because Green Mode won't respect me.

On my K20D, if I recall correctly, it was at least possible to have Green Mode shoot in raw, with center focus, with everything else programatically determined. Fine. Good for handing the camera over to an unfamiliar user.

Now, on my K-5, it's too dumbed-down. It's not even an adequate "Wife Mode" because it only outputs JPG files, which don't fit into my workflow.

So "P" mode it is. And I'll raise the flash if I think I need to.

Then what's that green rectangle on the mode dial?

I do not really think there is anything wrong with using the auto mode if it is getting the shots you want. You are giving up the option to have full creative control over how the photograph turns out , however. Once you are comfortable with the ins and outs of how aperture, shutter and ISO work and their effects on one another, I would strongly recommend you switch to either Av, Tv, or M. I promise you will enjoy the process and results more than full auto. I myself keep the camera in either Av, M or B and use the select-point autofocus (set at center usually). I occasionally use auto ISO if lighting is changing on a rapid and unpredictable basis and I need to keep shutter and aperture within a certain range. Again, don't worry about it being a "beginner" mode or whatever anyone else says. All that matters is you get the shots you want and you enjoy.

Av for my bird shots and TAv for everything else.

However I would like a "AA" (Ansel Adams) mode.

I only ever use it by accident. When I see jpegs in my Lightroom workflow I realise I must have slipped on the dial.
TAv, Av and M are my main modalities. When I need to dumb it down I shoot P, but don't really trust it.
