240 dpi

I was reviewing the properties on some of the pictures I have taken with my K-5. I usually shoot RAW then covert to JPEG using Photoshop Elements 10. I noticed that each picture is about 12-14MB in size but the horizontal and vertical dpi are both 240. The overall resolution for one example is 3264 x 4928 with a 24 bit depth. Perhaps I am over analyzing this but is the 240 dpi number normal as I would expect that to be higher and what exactly is it referring to? Thanks for clarifying my likely lack of knowledge and concern.

Dots Per Inch. I'm guessing this is in the "export" window.

The dpi is set by the camera and/or the software; it is an arbitrary, convenient size used in the editing program when the file is opened. At 240 dpi you will get an image sized about 25.3 by 12.7. Other cameras may default to 300 dpi = image size which will be about 16.4 x 10.3, other cameras will use 72 dpi, image size = about 44x66. It's all the same. The 12-14MB "picture size" is the size of the stored file. Your actual size in MB when you open the picture will be more than triple that, you should be able to check that inthe "Image sizing" (or what ever it is called in Elements) menu drop down.

DPI means dots per inch and is essentially a meaningless number except when you are printing. Your image size is 3264 x 4928, that is what is important. The DPI translates that image size into a physical dimension based on the display medium. For high quality ink jet that might be 300dpi (although most articles I've read say 240 is indistinguishable) or 5dpi for a huge billboard. The camera (or jpeg engine) assigns a default dpi when the jpeg is cooked. This can be changed in the printing or editing software.

A digitally stored image has no physical dimensions until those are assigned and that is determined by the output or display method.
