k5ii - central focus point

Comparing central focus point AF of the k5ii and k100d in some situations when a small/distant object is on the sky background (a plane or small bird), tamron 70-200 f2.8 hunts and can't set focus. I know there is a technological change that impact focus but there is an explanation for this?
Using other AF point it seems that it can lock the object.
Thanks.

Are you using Liveview or OVF on the K-5ii? (I prefer not to assume anything.)

I recommend to use OVF, and to pre-focus to infinity. With central focus, a small object in the sky is always a challenging target for AF, unless you get AF it straight away and pan with the subject.

I would suggest to set AF.S (rather than AF.C).

Is MF worth to consider? In some cases, definitely yes from my own experience, especially if the subject is really fr away (like a plane).

My 5 cents....

No live view, AF-S. Prefer AF instead MF. Question was why k100 can focus and k5 don't. Tried to help him, prefocus manually but when pressing the button it runs from one end to another trying to find something. Could be the lense-k5 combination? With other focus point is ok, for usual stuff is ok.

Is tracking AF on? Area expansion AF?

It could be that the newer AF in the k-5II is trying to provide better confirmation, and thus it racks back and forth on a tiny target, while the k-100D doesn't try to confirm as much and just ends as close as possible.
