Try this test, it puzzles me.

With Hi fps, rear AF button enabled and AF disabled from shutter, AF-S mode.

Test 1: push rear AF button to get lock. Release AF button. Now push and hold shutter and listen to FPS.

Test 2: same as above but do not release AF button while pushing shutter. Listen to FPS.

Why oh why is FPS much slower in test 1 than test 2

Does the camera check focus each shot? Though I don't think it should be in AF-S mode.

No additional focus check is done, AF-S should mean it checks AF lock once at the beginning of a burst and then goes full speed for the remainder of the burst. For some reason it won't though unless pressing AF button, even though it correctly doesn't attempt to refocus during the burst.

I thought AF-S was focus once then fire with AF-C being the opposite? I use the AC button only to lock focus initially with 11 points on and fire away in AF-C/FPS when shooting Table Tennis w/o a problem.
