The bird makes the shot different and special. Good capture!

Really nice composition/timing. Was cloudy all night here, so I could not even try to get at least a normal shot

Great timing! How long did you have to wait?

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all of the nice comments. I only had to wait about 15 minutes. I arrived at the beach on the
Chesapeake Bay, which is only 5 minutes from my house, only knowing that I wanted to get a picture of the rising moon.
I got a few pictures of the moon rising over the water. They were fine but nothing special. I started using the osprey nest for
perspective, taking some shots with the moon on either side of the nest. As soon as the moon started to clear the nest I moved
my tripod so that the moon and the nest would close to in line. I took some shots with the osprey doing his thing in the nest.
Within a minute or so of the moon clearing the nest the osprey just lifted up and took off. Sort of dumb luck really but I did have
the tripod in place, the lens focused, and the iso, shutter speed and aperture where I wanted them to be. Next time I see that
osprey I'll buy him a bag of chips.

Luck favors the prepared (mind).
Nothing dumb about it. You did all the right things beforehand, so that when an opportunity came along, you could capture it. Literally.
I don't use a tripod often (and not since it broke), but on the rare times I get to shoot I don't think I stay in one place for more than a few minutes at a time. Even if I'm just shuffling a bit to the left or right, I probably spend my time trying to work the shot, or looking for the next one. I guess sometimes, you just have to let it happen. (Thank goodness for the burst mode on the K5 which lets you capture a few of the moments just after the one you were trying to get).

mepaca, do you by any chance live in Rumbley, MD? My grandparents have a house down there, and the osprey nest looks like the same one that's right next to their house. Just curious.

No, I live in Annapolis. Lots of the nests can have similar qualities.
