da 18-250 as macro

I love my Pentax da 18-250 as a macro. I can get within 7 1/2 inches from my subject at any focal length.

Not to be a PIA, but isn't the closest focus 45 cm (17-3/4")? And, secondly, if you're correct, how did you get the dragonfly to be still at 7-1/2"? If I so much as bend down to get a dragonfly closeup those guys are more apt to take off than pose.

That's the published spec but mine can focus to 7 1/2 inches. I guess i could get so close because my lamb's ear buds are
so tasty. Here's another.

The spec is from the sensor plane, not from the end of the lens...

Add a Raynox and you'll get even closer. A DCR-250 will get you past 1:1 at focal lengths over 150mm.

You are correct sir. I'm at work now so don't have my K-5 here to measure. I'm just trying to visualize the distance in my mind and can't quite get all the way down to 7-1/2"; add around 3-1/2" for the lens, or maybe 6-1/2" when extended - that still would require about 3-3/4" to the sensor plane to get to the Pentax spec. Unless we're talking Medium Format the best I can say is that it's close.

It does seem a little too close -- maybe from the end of the hood. Seems to me to be around a foot, but I haven't measured...

When I'm travelling light photographic equipment wise and find I need either a longer lens or a macro lens, I cheat by cropping. Especially when faking a longer lens, bump up the shutter speed to what you would use for the longer lens. Unless you plan on printing large, it is sometimes amazing how many pixels you can throw away and still have decent image quality.

Some zooms do really well at this. Chasing dragonflies is fun, but you have no chance to get close on a hot afternoon!

Arggg! CROP!

And change that arbitrary 6:4 DSLR ratio to WHATEVER suits the esthetics of the image. That's the whole excuse for high-ISO image sensors. Doesn't ANYONE remember cropping on the enlarger/printer base tray?

Go to even a middle-school art class an' tell 'em they ABSOLUTELY MUST use a 6:4 ratio and watch the revolt. 6x4's a manufacturing compromise - not a LAW!

(Ya enjoyin' the 62B, VB?)
