Just got my new K5 IIs!

Hello community.

After many mind altering months I finally pulled the trigger on a new K5 IIs. This will be my first DSLR; upgrading from an old Canon PowerShot point-n-shoot!!

After scouring this forum and the posts and support from this community, I decided I'd go off the Canikonian beaten path and get a Pentax. This community is great - from other posts I've been reading, I can see it is very supportive as well. Thanks to all of you who contribute and made my decision easier.

I'm also taking a digital photography class at my local community college. The instructor is great; though a Nikonian for decades.

I've updated my firmware. Checked my shutter count - only 5 which I've put on myself. I'm starting with DA 18-55mm
WR and 50mm lenses. The second because of a recommendation from a friend and a posting "The Perfect Zebra Photo in 3 East Steps" in the Photo Articles of the forum.

I'll upgrade as I get used to the camera and settings. I don't know what type of photographs I'll be most interested in taking yet - maybe macro, maybe landscape, most likely astrophotography. But there are some awesome examples to learn from here.

Just wanted to introduce myself and say Hi!

Welcome Mitul! As you may have discovered, the community here is quite knowledgeable, and pretty fair too everyone.

If I may make a suggestion, since this is an international forum, you might want to put your approximate geographical location in your profile, so folks can better answer your questions. Edit: I see your location is already specified, guess i overlooked that.

Enjoy the camera.

You're off to a great start, glad you joined us! The hardest part is behind you, though as a Pentaxian you mind will never again be un-altered

Welcome, Mitul. I believe you have made a great camera choice and I hope that you enjoy it well. I also think it is admirable that you are developing your own skills with the college class you are taking. Have fun!

@Tanzer - you didn't overlook my location - it wasn't in my profile, but I took your suggestion and updated it.

Thanks to everyone else for the welcome.

Actually, thinking of photography and taking this class has actually made me think a little differently when I approach a picture opportunity. I think though it much more than just snapping it as I did with the point-n-shoot. My class will end soon. Not looking forward to that. Probably sign up for another one if they offer it.

I think you'll get a lot of joy out of your choice. Plenty of thoughts and advice here about getting the most out of it. If I may make a suggestion? Somewhere on your radar should be the DA*50-135 f2.8 lens - that lens has given me just as much joy as the k5II for me.
