Which LCD zoom level equates to 100% on the K-5?

Hi All,

After reading the K-3 first impressions review, I notice a feature on the K-3 that I've been yearning for on the K-5:

QuoteQuote:
When viewing images in playback mode, the K-3 now tells you when you've reached 100% magnification (on 24-megapixel files, an "100%" icon is shown at 8.3x zoom). This will give users peace-of-mind as overzoom might make images look worse than they actually are.

Does anyone know what zoom level on the K-5's LCD equates to 100%?

Additionally, I'd love to see this feature in a firmware upgrade! That shouldn't be too difficult and is something I feel should be implemented across the board.

Many thanks!

Luke.

I believe it's close to 8x, not 100% sure though. There are a few other threads on this subject already.

Many thanks. Sorry, I did search, but didn't see anything. I definitely think I've been over zooming in that case leading me to believe that my images are too soft. I've been going in to 16x... at 8x they look much better!

4X seems pretty close to 100% on screen.

K-3: 8.3× | k-5: 7.4×

I’m too lazy to search, but the consensus was ~8×…

For the K-3 it’s easy because both the sensor (6016×4000) and the LCD (720×480) have an aspect ratio of 3:2. 100% would correspond to a magnification equal to the ratio of the diagonals (7724/865=8.349). Bingo.

The K-5 is a little bit tricky because the sensor (4928×3264) has an aspect ratio of 3:2 and the LCD with VGA 4:3. That’s why we get a 56px black bar on the bottom of the LCD at 1×. Only at higher levels the entire LCD is used. 100% ~5911/800=7.389. So 8× is the closest we can get with the zoom levels supported by the firmware.

You compare the same image at 100% on the computer while fiddling with the replay zoom to match it up :-)

Or, 8X sounds right.

I did that and somehow ended up with 4X, must revisit...

8x, but you should really not be looking at the images that size to gauge focus sharpness, because the display won't be as good as your computer monitor. I find that looking at my images at 4x gives a better indication of focus sharpness.

Focus checking is the primary reason.

I'll stick with 8x... it seems to be working pretty well.
