K-5 vs K-30 battery life

Why does the K-5 get so much more battery life than the k-30?

Because K5 has a battery with higher capacity.
K5 = 1860mAh VS K30 = 1050mAh

So the battery in K5 holds approx. 75% more energy than the battery in K30.

I use low discharge AA batteries for my K30, like the Sanyo Eneloops. Over a 5 day winter break vacation, I shot 350 photos mostly without flash, and the battery indicator stayed at 100% full until the last day. I haven't tried the K30 native battery since I sort of got addicted to using AA's a long time ago. The battery life seems the same as on my K-x, which dpreview says 640 shots. I think the eneloops are around 2000mha, but the voltage is different.

See this link; SteveB claims 1000 shots per charge https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/151-pentax-k-30-k-50/221163-battery-life-...aa-holder.html

That k30 battery is much smaller size and more lightweight too. Some people like lightweight cameras

The K-30/50 LiON battery is the same one used in the K-r. However, the K-30 (and probably K-50) has higher power demands than the K-r, so the battery gets fewer shots with the K-30. The reason for sticking with the K-r size battery is it also allowed the use of the K-r's AA adapter, which has proven to be a popular accessory.

Different photographers have different needs. For me, the ability to use AA size eneloops for all my gear and travel with just one charger outweighed the slightly smaller capacity when shooting with the K-30.

Being able to use AAs is awesome!! So glad the kept that option with the K-50/500 line!! Much embarrassment has been avoided by being able to grab the AAs out of the flash!!
