So I got a K-5iis and put it through its paces yesterday. I used my FA43mm ltd. My K-5 classic took a ton of sharpening. With the iis though, the slightest bit of sharpening and microcontrast causes artifacts.

Are you guys using any sharpening with the iis?

Btw, I loooooove this camera. It is like an old friend coming from an original K-5.

Yes, the K5IIs is way sharp due to the removal of the AA filter...

When I first got mine I shot a few jpegs just to see what the processor was like, and at the default setting they were over sharpened to my eye.

When I first got mine, I set the sharpness to +2. When using the kit lens, this was ok, although some slight artifacts could be detected. Then I got a Sigma 17-70 and +2 is hideous. More artifacts than an Indiana Jones movie. I set it back to the default level (+1) and things look great. Not seeing halos or other symptoms of oversharpening.

So it's definitely a function of your lens.

I shoot raw and pp with light room and occasionally use sharpening. What strikes me the most is how much careful I've got to be with the clarity (microcontrast) slider. I think that is as better gain than sharpness from the aa filter less model

No AA filter is almost like applying an unsharp mask on the original photo in-camera, but of course a bit better. So further sharpening may still improve the image, but it shouldn't be necessary.

It certainly must play a part.
I remember when I first got my DA*300 and mounted it on my K-5 (after several years of using a DAL 55-300), every shot looked considerably over-sharpened. I had to adjust my usual RAW sharpening routine considerably.

If you are shooting jpeg, you can try changing sharpening mode to fine sharpen.
If you shoot raw, you need to look at things like sharpening diameter and masking. Or just lower the global sharpening!

Job done!

I shoot in Raw and use DxO.
DxO has a microcontrast slider and Unsharp Mask sliders.
