lens release button

Hey all:
My lens release button seems to have fallen off my K-5. Does anybody know if this is a screw on button or whatever, and how do I obtain getting a new one on it. I have insurance on the camera but they told me it sounded like physical damage and that it wasn't covered under the policy, and that I would have to get it fixed myself.
Thank-you.

It's a well-known fault of the K-5. It happened to one of mine.
It does not screw in - it's a pin/sleeve glue-in job with a little conical rubber diaphragm for weather sealing. I was able to find it and repaired it myself.

It is not physical damage so you should be able to send it in. Many K-5's had the button just fall off. To do it right and have it still be WR the process requires a service center.
Parts are not sold to the general public anymore unfortunately.

Genuine Pentax Replacement Parts from USCamera.com

People use superglue to put it back on. One poster said that was what Pentax told them to use. I can't say if this is the best method though.

Yes, glue it back. But only apply the glue to the very tip of the pin, and make sure not to touch the rubber sealing, as it needs to slide through. Good luck!

It happened to me, amid some rocks, and was lost. I had to get it replaced at a local service centre. I was told that a new one was coming available soon (this was over a year ago) that had been redesigned without the fault.

Yep, mine fell off a ways back (several years ago) and I was able to get the part from CRIS. Gluing did not work for me but gaffer's tap over it keeping it in works very well, thank you.

Mine fell off twice. Had it fixed the first time. The second time I put the button back in place, then put black electrical tape over the top to hold it in. Still that way and still working, and unless you look carefully you can't tell there's tape holding it on (just tape right over the top of the button and it'll work forever).

BTW, the reason I didn't glue it was I had this fear I'd get glue on something I'd really regret later. Tape was safer IMHO.

Mine fell off last week and I couldn't find it so had to order new parts. Still waiting for them to come in. These are the part numbers Pentax Canada told me to order: 007724 0-A107 Mount lock button 0076830 A99 Lock button packing 0027030 A358 Retainer ring A. Looks like a pretty small hole so I sure hope it all makes sense when I finally see the parts.

It needs to be taken apart to install.

I've ordered the lens button and packing. The retainer ring should still be in the camera. When the parts arrive I'll open up the front and fix it. I'll try to make some sort of how-to.

I'd be real interested in the part # you ordered and where from so I can order it also. Pentax told me I would have to send the camera in for repairs, and I don't really want to do that for that small repair.
Thank-you

Uscamera.com has the parts on their website. Pentax doesn't even do the repairs anymore. When I called the repair company they refer to they couldn't even give me a quote. I don't mind doing some diy repairs and I don't want to sit around waiting for a simple repair that might cost me a lot anyway.

Here is the link to the Lego fix. I'm printing this out for future reference.

I took the correct but more involved route of disassembling the camera and removing the bottom, top and front only to find that the retainer was nowhere to be found. I then fabricated one of my own using a tiny washer I had in my parts box and a Dremel tool. It's solid as a rock now. Disassembly was quite a process with the amount of different screws involved, but once you find out which screws to remove and where to find them it's feasable. But I would not recommend it to anyone out there.

So as a tip from me please also order the retainer if you want to fix it the way it was designed to be (without resorting to superglue).
