K5iis shoots underexposed

my k-5 shoots underexposed pics in av or manual mode. they are dark enough I can't fix them post processing.
shooting some snow pics today f8-160 shutter would go to 1/3000 the next pic 1/750 in the same light and both are underezposed

It seems like your might be in brackting mode.

In manual mode you are the one who decides the exposure !

snow scenes are classic cases where the camera's meter will underexpose the shot. Dial in some compensation.

Perhaps posting some shots will help.

Are you in matrix metering mode? Otherwise a really bright background can really throw off the meter.

the camera was in matrix with 11 point focus instead of single, and other stuff turned on. I went thru the menu and the camera works great. thanks!

Shooting in snow will definitely throw off your meter readings if you're shooting in priority modes. (AV in your case) I did up this short article a couple years ago, so have a read. Hopefully you find it of some use.
