Pentax K5 video shuts off after 5 minutes

I want to be able to record a wedding ceremony that I’ll be officiating. However, the Video mode on my K5 camera shuts off automatically after a little over 5 minutes.

Any suggestions?

Maximum video size is 4GB or 25 minutes. If your camera shuts off after 5 minutes you have likely reached the 4GB limit.

According to Pentax Ricoh support:

Thank you for contacting PENTAX. The limit for recording a video clip on the K-5 is 4GB. This means that when the movie file size reaches 4GB, which is about the length you describe in HD 720p 30fps recording mode, the camera must stop recording and then be restarted. If you want to record longer video clips, up to 25 minutes maximum, you must lower the movie quality setting in the K-5's Rec. Mode menu. Here are approximate recording times in move mode on the K-5 by quality settings:

MOVIE (H:M:S) 3 star ---- 2 star ---- 1 star
1080p25----------00:01:19 -- 00:01:44 ---00:02:25
720p30 -----------00:02:08 --00:03:16-----00:04:33
720p25 -----------00:02:33 --00:03:54 ----00:05:26
VGA, 30 FPS ---00:06:17 --00:09:30---- 00:13:04
VGA, 25 FPS ---00:07:31 --00:11:19 -----00:15:29

As you may have realised, a digital stills camera is not a video camera. The maximum file size is due to the SD card FAT32 file system, but the maximum recording time limit is something that is an issue with all digital stills cameras, supposedly because of EU taxation issues. If you want to record longer than 15 minutes you will need to make use of a video camera.

Umm it totally is, just one with limitations

Fully agree though, DSLRs are far more suited to lots of smaller clips than continuous video recording.

In my view, it's a stills camera that is capable of shooting video. That does not, in my view, make it a video camera.
