A little bit busy at the time, but I did make a lot of sports images over the past weeks.

This is Katrien Gielen, Belgium beachvolley player (Team Mouha/Gielen) at the EC Beachvolleybal in The Netherlands. They lost this game from the Dutch team Keizer-vanIersel who became champion today.
Nice. Never get tired of your beach volleyball shots!

Very nice shot here! That is a very tough one to get focus.

Texas Ranger Yu Darvish - taken from the topmost section with my Tamron 7-200.

Not real sports - just a bunch of kids playing ball at a park (between the Texas Rangers and the Dallas Cowboys stadiums). Do these count?

Heads up!

I can't match the quality of most of these entrants, but I've learned a lot from looking. Here's a recent soccer shot from the Tamron 70-200...

And a Disc Golf shot with the Tamron 28-75...

Saw some kids playing "three dollars," at a sand lot and snapped a couple of photos.

I agree. I wear athletic supporters and a mouthpiece every time I play chess.

This video nicely demonstrates why the "spray and pray" technique is bad for sports photography. Even at 10fps, it fails to capture the crucial moments. It is much better to use single-shot mode and anticipate the shots. In fact, this is what most sports photographers I know do.

Of course, for some situations, a fast burst can be very helpful, but you shouldn't rely on it for everything. A more crucial point is the lack of fast auto-focusing lenses. Let's hope the DA* series is retrofitted with the new "DC" magnetic motors.
I've found I like the focus peaking on my NEX-5n for dogs. It's really great on a field of grass, as you can see your zone in red(or whatever color you choose) on the grass and fire when your subject hits the zone. It's also easy to reposition the zone, and you get a great visual representation of your depth of field. I think the K-01 and the K-30 might end up being great for sports photography because of this, but I'm a Newb to action photography. It would be a show of goodwill by Pentax to add focus peaking to the K-5 in a firmware update. I wonder if it's possible.

This was wide open.

Really nice photos here.

Here are a few photos taken with K-5 and DA*16-50 or DA*50-135 at the Lisbon stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race, in really wet conditions as I was shooting from a zodiac:

1
1/1000s f/3.2 at 135.0mm iso80

2
1/800s f/5.6 at 39.0mm iso80

3
1/1600s f/4.0 at 135.0mm iso80

4
1/800s f/4.0 at 85.0mm iso80

These and more are also under Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 - Lisbon Photo Gallery by Dominique Schreckling at pbase.com.

I also published an article about the stopover in Lisbon under Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12: Unexpected Excitement in Lisbon | IMPress. The actual leg from Lisbon to Lorient looks really tough: Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12: Leg 8 Day 5, Screaming speeds for Volvo fleet as storm takes hold | IMPress
