Some shots from the Hyundai A-League soccer match on 20 Jan 2013 between Brisbane Roar and Western Sydney Wanderers.

Match Report
http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/brisbaneroar/news-display/wanderers-beat...hampions/58705

Like many professional sporting events in Australia, there is a 200mm FL restriction on the public's cameras and they inspect all bags going into the stadium. So it makes it difficult when you're situated up in the stands. Also the match started at 4pm. While this is good for escaping the summer heat in Brisbane, the light is starting to weaken.

Anyway. Here are some shots. K-5 & Sigma 70-200/F2.8.

Poljak vs Broich

Nichols scored the sole Roar goal.

Topor-Stanley behind Broich

Topor-Stanley colliding with Berisha

Topor-Stanley defensive kick. The looks on the faces of "The Den" (Roar club supporters) is priceless.

Michael Theo (Roar) almost saved this goal

4-shot sequence of a defensive save by a mighty header from Polenz (2nd from left). What a rebound!

2-shot sequence of a collision between Kresinger (white shorts), Theo & Donachie. Theo ends up punching his team mate in a leap to get at the ball.

The ball passes Beauchamp from left of image. He performs the splits trying to reach it.

Dan.

" there is a 200mm FL restriction on the public's cameras " - what a scam!!! Would half the turkeys at the gates know what they are looking at? What about a teleconverter? What about going to 4/3s to 'lengthen' the FL? Our country is going/has gone to the dogs!

200mm on a medium format or on a Q? If it is about the tele length that ban is just weird. Musicians here have almost quit banning or restricting photos and started to see it as free advertising. Why do the sports world seem to go the exact opposite way? Maybe something about sponsoring as Canon, Nikon and Sony are huge sponsors to the sports world and want to "buy the stadium" during events?

I believe that the argument for restricted photographic access at sporting events is that professional photographers are charged a annual licence fee to shoot at these places, and the restrictions are imposed to preserve their livelihood.

Yes, I was thinking about shooting with either an MFT camera or with a tele-converter. The later would be easy to slip into your pocket. Unfortunately the main lens I have, a Sigma 70-200/F2.8 II, does not get on well with a Sigma 1.4x tele-conveter on a Pentax. Perhaps other tele-converters would work here.

Dan.

Maybe I'm wrong but I consider these dancers athletes (or maybe we should start a different thread for K-5 for dance?)
These were primarily taken with the Sigma 70-200 2.8 HSM II in poor HS gym lighting in TAV mode @ f3.5 and anywhere from 1/200-1/400 sec, ISO hovered around 2500-3200. In LR4 the pictures required a touch of white balance shift, a little noise correction and a bump of exposure since I was running about .5 stops negative exposure comp to be able to keep the shutter speed up and ISO down.

I had to reply to this because like always this time of the year I'm seriously annoyed about the conditions. Too cold, too much snow, no light, to name a few reasons. And I hate the quality of the pictures. My K-5 / Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 combo has trouble nailing the focus and for a guy like me who wants to freeze the action using the minimum of 1/1000 s shutter speed, having to use a max 1/500 s is just not good enough.

Anyway, our U19 season has begun and these are from the second qualifying match against our neighbours who got the silver in last year's Finnish championship while our boys took the gold. Sorry for the lack of quality. The match started at 3:15 PM and the light was dimming fast.

A bit less vibrance here just for the heck of it

What's usually a spray of swet and moisture is ice and snow here

The white #5 scores the winning goal with a header

It was snowing the whole time

So, there it is. The next match will be inside a football hall, which is kind of nice, but it won't make taking pictures the least bit easier because the lighting is still cr... bad.

I purchased a Sigma 70-200 HSM II last week (used) and got the chance to use it tonight at a basketball game. It does seem to focus a bit quicker than my Tamron 70-200. All these shots were wide open at f/2.8 in TAV mode at 1/400th a sec.

Friendly international game between Belgium and The Netherlands

Yesterday in Waregem the first international game for the lady's from the Netherlands in 2013. Everything is for preparation for the coming European Championship in july in Sweden. Many players not present this time due to enjury's, clubthings and sick players at club Ajax (something in the food) Also the debut for the new tricot for the away games, where the man already had a chance to wear it a few days ago against Itali.

1) Captain Daphne Koster

2) For Belgium Tessa Wullaert on the ball.

3) Belgium wall knows the reputation off the freekicks from Sherida Spitse.

4) Goal selebrating, Daniëlle van de Donk in the middle.

5) Lieke Martens after the ball.

Wonder what brought that on... did they eat some lasagna by a chance.
Great shots as usual, thanks for sharing.

The Discus Throw

Normally, during competition, I can't get on to this field to take close-up shots. But this was a training day and it wasn't too late and the light was OK.

My son, Kaiea, practising his discus throwing, in preparation for competing in the U11 Boys Discus event at the 2013 Regional Championships on 16-17 Feb 2013.

Taken at the State Athletics Facility, Nathan, Queensland.

I was so busy getting the focus right, I forgot to include his feet!

It's not about his feet. It's about this image! Good job done.
