I disagree with Andre on one point ...the AF on the 60-250 is not the fastest. A Tamron 70-200/2.8 is faster (in all aspects) and razor sharp, the Sigma 70-200/2.8, whilst not as sharp as the Tammy is quieter and has very slightly faster AF. Both should crop very well to an effective 300.

The K5 AF-C is plenty good enough for you .... posted before but in this shot the bird was shot as dusk and was around 80 metres away when I took this (K5 + DA*300).

Well, I never said the 60-250 is the fastest with respect to AF, but it is better than the 50-135. However the Sigma 70-200 will run circles around the 60-250 when it comes down to AF.

So here are my questions:

1. How is the AF.C performance (speed & accuracy) of the new camera/lens combo compared to the old one?

2. Does AF.C on the K-5 show any tracking ability at all? I get a lot of shots where the auto-focus point is between 2 players, i.e. the background, so the players themselves are OOF. Using centre-point AF wouldn't help unless I can be sure of getting one of the players in the centre at some stage and then locking focus on them with AF decoupled from the shutter release button.

3. Is ISO3200 acceptable on this camera (+1 stop over the K20D or +2 stops if I also shoot fully open at f/4)?

About 5 times on Saturday I had very long delays where I'd filled the K20D's 13-14 shot raw buffer with 2.9 fps bursts because I thought interesting stuff was about to occur. Even though the K-5's buffer is deeper, I'm sure it will be easy to fill this up in the exciting moments.

Dan.
I did a testrun with the 60-250 on my K-5:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/143968-da%2A60-250mm-f4-test.html
There is no tracking AF of any kind, just AF adjustment as sone there is movement outside of the focust airea.

When shooting the buffer full with 22-24 RAW's it takes some 25-30 seconds (depending on how much there is into these pictures/iso etc) with no lenscorrections or anything on to empty. That is with a fast card. SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s or SanDisk Pro cards UHS-I 45MB/s are your cards. There can be about 1300 RAW on a 32 GB card, so take a spare. The K-5 isn't the fastest camera, it is slower then K-7 since it is running on 14-bit RAW. Don't know about K20D since that has PRIME I proceesor wich is about 80 % slower then PRIME II but run's on 12 bit RAW (I guess that K20D is just a little faster).

Up to some point in image quality up to iso6400 is usable, but there are some limitations when you want big prints.

I went out with my K-5 and took a snapshot of the team Mouha - Gielen who are on their way to the 2012 olympics.

Shot the recent PSP Chicago Open at CPX Sports in Joliet, IL. A very harsh and hostile environment but the K-5 did a really fine job. The only problem I had was the glitchy behavior I reported in another thread after changing batteries, but that went away after a while. Oh, and this other problem:

Luckily the paintball hit on the K-5 and not on the Tamron 70-200, and I had stuck some gaffer tape over the speaker port minutes before. After that incident I taped a T-shirt over the lens since the plastic bag wasn't really working out.

Pentax's TAv mode is really super for sports, especially on the K-5 where high ISO is much more usable. I set it to f/3.5 and 1/3000s and managed to capture so many shots of paintballs in the air. Had the camera set to 7 fps continuous and "sprayed and prayed" for most of these.

AF-C also fared rather well, this photo was of the player running directly towards the camera

Wow, those are some fantastic shots Darren. Just great. Some are worthy of being in an issue of Facefull.

I spoke with Gary Baum of PaintballPhotography.com between games, and he asked me what I was shooting with, and he said "Woah, that's a whole different dimension" when I showed him my Pentax That guy beats the hell out of his Canon gear for a living though

Very nice photos!!
How is tamron on k5? I have 70-200 f2.8 and think to upgrade from k100d to k5. This lens is a very flexible toy.

Awesome shots of the paintball game Darren. Just shows once more how rugged that K5 is. Did the paint struck your fingers?

Here a few shots with K5 + DA*300 taken at the Unicef Open. It's the only grass court tournament in Holland and it's played just before Wimbledon. Just to get used to playning on grass.
The player is Setlana Kuznetsova
