Hi

Jeeze, the ball will be in the net before you see it coming. If the kicker can see or find the goal posts that is.

Greetings

Yeah, that is by now also my favorite picture of that series. Fog gives new oppertunity's.

This weekend there is the ONK, wich is the Open Dutch Championship swimming in 50m pool. All the topswimmers are here from The Netherlands (and we do expect some gold medals in London) because of the competition to get selected for the 2012 Olympics.

1) Sharon van Rouwendaal

2) Moniek Nijhuis

3)

4) Femke Heemskerk

5) Sharon van Rouwendaal

All pictures taken with K-5 Silver and DA*300mm.

Is in the exif. All f4 and like number 4 iso4000 and 1/500th and number one with iso3200 and 1/640th.

There was a new lightplan in the building because in april there was just half the amount of light. Good investment I think. There will be European Championship waterpolo in januari 2012.

Ron, they all have a silver cast! (Just kidding)

You are doing extra well with you sports shooting and even I the serial pest for colour criticism can't find a thing wrong with your pics. You have got it down to a fine art.
Now carry on, and for heaven's sake don't fall into the drink.

Greetings

Have been trying out a few different settings on the K5 for outdoor sports. These shots are from last weekend. Yes, we do play American Football Down Under (and it is bloody hot this time of year). For this game I set the camera on manual, f5.6, 1/3200, ISO 800 using a Sigma 120-400 and tried to use Portrate aspect for all shots. Next assignment is to try TvAV and try to bump the shutter speed up.

More in the Photobucket link at the end if your keen

Oh, and comment welcome please........only way to improve is to get feedback

That is a nice set. Where do you want to go with your shutterspeed? There is no need for going faster.

Never been at this sport, however there are a few teams overhere. I put it on my to do list.

Hi Ron,

Well, I was standing next to a Cannon shooter who was using an f2.8 300mm and he runs at 1/8000 (he normally shoots baseball). So I am curious as to how high I can push the speed on the K5 with the sigma telephoto. Truth tell I did get it up to that speed today, but the shots were a bit under exposed at a reasonable ISO (1600 ish) so I dropped back to 1/5000, pretty happy with the results so far, but still in the workflow process so won't be posting any examples until later in the week.

On another note, for the life of me, i can't seem to find the exif information on your posts, unless of course they are in your 'Gallery'?

With PhotoMe you can read the exif info.

Well maybe for rocketlaunches you need 1/8000th, but for a sports like this even 1/1250 should be good. I did soccer with 1/400th because of lacking light.

Before I could get on with my hockey shooting project I had to do some more football. The black & white team is our U17 juniors, and the black team are more or less grown-ups. Glad to say that we won ;D
Note that the match started at noon, yet the shadows are quite long. No snow yet, though.
Tamron 70-200 2.8 wide open.

Bruce, just because someone else uses 1/8000s doesn't mean you have to.

The exposure settings of 1/3200, f/5.6, ISO 800 are for light value of LV 13.6. For normal sports (except perhaps hockey, cricket, baseball & motorsports), a top shutter speed of 1/1000s-1/1250s should be OK.

Problem with using ISO3200 here is that you loose detail, micro-contrast and clipping headroom unnecessarily. The camera applies non-defeafable NR (even to raw files) above ISO1600.

Also any ISO above ISO1600 is performed by straight digital multiplication (just shifting bits). Each stop increase in ISO typically reduces the clipping headroom & DR by 1 stop, so if you did want to increase the ISO above ISO1600, you're better off shooting in raw with 1 stop underexposed (either using M or -1 EVcomp) at ISO1600, and then boost the "exposure" setting in the raw converter during PP. This way you preserve the clipping headroom (which will come in handy if part of the field/player is backlight) and you don't get any NR in-camera (you can perform your own in PP, if needed).

The extra flexibility of raw will lead to better results when dodging to bring up shadowed faces etc.

At LV 13.6, I'd use 1/1000s, f/5.6, ISO250. Keep the ISO as low as possible - it's just analogue gain (up to ISO1600) or digital gain (above ISO1600). It does not increase the amount of light captured by the sensor (that's down to just shutter speed & aperture).

I've shot a lot of junior soccer with a K20D in TAv mode at 1/800s-1/1000s if there's enough light. With a K-5 now, I'll have more flexibilty in overcast days or early/late games.

Dan.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for that. I shoot in Raw format and am trying to keep under 1600 ISO. The finals are next weekend, so will try lowing the ISO and shutter speed and see how I go. Actually, looking back through my shots with a KM over the past couple of years the daylight shutter speed has been around 1/1250.

Oh, and for Ron, I have downloaded PhotoMe, no problems viewing your Exif data now!

Regards

Bruce

PhotoMe's good for extensive investigation, but with online images it's more convenient to be able to to right-click and check the main Exif data immediately. In Firefox, I use Exif Viewer.

Here what I see when I right-clicked on Ron's first swimming shot #1 (Sharon van Rouwendaal):

BTW, you can use the embedded APEX shutter speed & apertures values in conjunction with the stops difference in ISO to work out the LV without using a LV calculator. Using the coloured data above:

Aperture Value (APEX) = 4/1 = Av 4
Shutter Speed Value (APEX) = 9321928/1000000= Tv 9.3

Ev = Av + Tv

Ev is ISO100 referenced, whereas LV considers the effect of different ISOs. To adjust for a different ISO, subtract the difference in stops from ISO100. (
If a sensitivity less than ISO100 is used, add the difference e.g. with ISO80 add 0.3 stops.)

ISO Speed Ratings = 3200 =
5 stops above ISO100
ISO100-> ISO200 (1 stop) -> ISO400 (2 stops) -> ISO800 (3 stops) -> ISO1600 (4 stops) ->ISO 3200 (5 stops)

LV = Av + Tv - ISOdiff

= Av 4 + Tv 9.3 - 5 stops
= LV 8.3

Which is a very low light level for action, which is why Ron used such a high ISO, dropped the shutter speed to 1/640s and shot wide open at f/4.

See the last two posts here for more info on APEX & LV from Exif:

Dan.
wow that is a lot of info and handy explanation.

Well I'm still in for a camera with a bigger sensor that has better performance in low light conditions like this.

Fantastic fog shots Ron!
What happened to the DA*60-250?
