Andre, for your hurdling pictures, I imagine you had that last set of hurdles prefocused, and took the shots with manual focus?

Thanks for the comments Jake and sofar I have not found some special accesory overhere.
I didn't use manual focus jake. With the K5 I finally have confidence to use the AF-C mode which I never trusted and used with K10D and K7D.
For the hurdling I first got a shot when they started and then using teh DA*300 quick shift capabilty quickly focussed on the last hurdle. Then waiten for them to start their jump on that last hurdle and fired away. Here the shot from the start

I have been practising a number of sports in my younger days which gaves me a head start since I know when and where interesting moments will arise.

Looks like I was right about Sedoc's form. He's at the first hurdle miles before the rest. The fact that you have camped in his lane suggests he may have been the favourite

Well he was national champion and has been selected in the olympics team. Does that kind of info makes him a favorit

I should have said pre-focus instead of manual focus, that is what I meant. I do agree with you that the K-5's AF-C ability is much improved from prior models, and at least is now usable. I would not say that I have confidence in it though for subjects moving towards me. Using your hurdling pictures as an example, it would be nice to be just use AF-C and get in focus pictures at whatever points in the race you would like. Actually, maybe with the hurdles in the foreground that might be expecting a little too much. Maybe a better example would just be a 100 meter sprint. In that case your method would be much harder because you would have no hurdle to focus on, and it would be nice to have confidence in the AF-C keeping up.

Anyway, a great job by you of knowing your equipment and using the method that works best for your equipment.

Hi Jake, I for sure wouldn't use the K5 and its AF-C to track a sprinter coming at meand think that I could get the shots. I have seen a test serie of a Canon EOS 1d tracking a sprinter and even that camera missed out 1 or 2 shots in a serie of 10 consecutive shots. With the K5 I would be glad if I could have 2 out of 10 in such a test.
If you know the weak spots of your equipment you normally can find some way to work around it and get the job done. This discussion just shows that the AF of the K5 isn't too bad, it's only not up to par with the elite and that it requires a little bit more skills and creativity to get the shot. What is life without some chalenges.

Three U10 soccer action shots. All with K-5 & DA* 60-250/F4. All 1/800s.

#1. f/5.6, ISO400, 128mm FL. I like BIF shots: boys in flight. This shot had the back of the coach's balding head in frame at the bottom centre. I couldn't crop around it, so I cloned it out.

#2. f/5, ISO800, 250mm FL. Far side of the field action about 65-70m from the camera. The camera overexposed greatly on this shot. I've managed to pull some of it back in raw, but the official's yellow fluoro vest is blown beyond recovery and the top of the yelllow shin guard has no pattern left.

#3. f/5.6, ISO400, 200mm FL. A photogenic face.

Great shots Kellyboy. Exif shows you used a K5 and a 200mm lens. Are you allowed to bring the big (eg Sigma 50-500) into the stadium or could you only bring the Pentax 50-200?

I used my K-5 & DA L 55-300 in AF-C mode fro some horse racing a couple of weeks ago. Worked out reasonably well I think.
I prefocused before they came by so AF would just need to touch up as they passed.
