THE AF IS NOW FREAKY FAST!

At least on my (SDM) da*300 , which takes its sweet time on the K20D but on the K5 its BAM! Focused. I did not expect such a huge improvement. Its REALLY fast.

Do you have a non-auto focus SMC prime lens to shoot a few snaps with? Have you uploaded any shots yet?

I have no experience with Movie mode but by just kicking off recording I have not found a button to push to make it AF while recording.
=====================================

From what I've seen so far, the K5 does not do continuous AF while filming video.

e.g., the user does the focusing, just like in the K7 and K-x.

Is this correct?

Certainly not by what has been posted here. In one of the other threads, Frank said that the AF is faster than the K-7, but not as big of a jump as is was from the K20 to the K-7. We need a bigger jump than that. These people just got their cameras, it's tough to quantify it quickly. I sure hope we can knock AF performance off the list of Pentax negatives.

Did I miss it, or did you say what lens you got with your K5?

And where did you order yours from?

Just for your info, the beep alert on the K-5 can be switched on or off. You can also adjust the volume.
Do you have the K-5 and the K-r and how is the af on your K-r?

I love my K20D also. It is a great camera. But the K-5 is so new and shiny!

Yes, since they just got their cameras so it is tough to quantify it quickly; but not as tough as trying to quantify it without having the camera at all.

I like my K20d a lot also, but I suspect that even the K-r will kick its butt on many fronts with exceptions of viewfinder and weather sealing and dual dials.

Thanks for all the replies on the shutter, its quieter

From what i know, and i don't know much, camera makers often buy sub-assemblies, like shutters. So if they need to shave costs, they can sub in a cheaper subassembly for that model. (i think) I shoot with a guy who has a D300s, and he is annoyed that its got a louder shutter than the D300, and the beeps can be heard 15 to 20 feet away. Not to whack Nikon, but it just goes to show that things can change within the same series.

Not to whack the K20D either, personally i'm going to keep mine indefinitely. It'll help me be patient until the price lowers a bit on the K5 - looks very good, i'm delighted that Pentax knocked this one out of the park.

Did i say that my K20 has actual doors over the plugins

AF is going to be really difficult to compare between systems without actually taking both and shooting under similar conditions.

I think AF-S is going to be just fine and compatible with the competition

AF-C is the one that will be more critical to have improvement quantified.

Agreed. I really want to take photos of moving motorcycles with predictable results. The K20d can't keep up. Hopefully the K-5 can..

I can't really comment too much on AF-C as I never really used it with the K7, nor would I really know how to quantify any potential improvement on the K5.

However, I was definitely able to see an increase in locking speed between the K5 and K7 using both a screw-driven lens (FA31) and a SDM lens (DA*60-250). In both cases, the K5 locks more quickly and with fewer "micro-corrections" at the end. I wouldn't necessarily say the screw drive feels faster, just more "confident", if that makes sense.

And here's some gratuitous camera/lens porn as I happen to have a pair of DA*60-250 lenses at the moment; it made comparing the two bodies that much easier
