Panning anybody? What about panning in BIF with a K20D


K20D with Sigma 18-250 @ 200mm, cropped to 600mm (35mm equivalent).

That's one monster shutter blur you have here

Rarely got problems with objects moving at the camera, but the slow shutter in K20 I only get one chance to get a good picture,either its too far away or too close.
So I hope K-5 have time to focus while it burst 7pix/s

ibbe, what lens, in exif there is 400mm? On 55-300 sometimes (too often) AF reacts too late and then there is lottery will it make BF (usually) but sometimes FF. In bad weather or in sunset it's even worse.
I know that lens is slow, but maybe new AF will make it more reliable.

Very usefull. You can much more accurately AF with shallow DOF and so on.

Yes its Fa*400.got a 55-300 and it works well but as soon as it missed fokus
Af travels back and forward and it took forever before it found the way back, and the codak moment it lost.

Unfortunately, TC with Pentax AF is a problem because the TC doesn't multiply focal length and more importantly, the lens code K_value to the body. This makes Pentax AF hunt with a TC.

Nice pics Falk, unfortunately doubling the focus length with the FA600 f4.0 (which weighs 7 kg), makes panning near impossible.

Haa, should not be a problem for me, I am no powerlifter but I like to use this as well....

Slightly offtopic, but I am looking into my options indeed and the Sigma 500/4.5 EX seems to one of the few options whch may still be usable free hand and has cropping potential. However, so far I couldn't find out how the AF works with the Sigma 1.4x TC and how much of a cropping potential the Sigma 500/4.5 EX really has. Esp. with 16MP APSC and 1.4x which resolve 150 lp/mm.

Looks like we have some good examples here and I have rarely had any issues with AF-C . My KX is even better than my K200D

However, so far I couldn't find out how the AF works with the Sigma 1.4x TC and how much of a cropping potential the Sigma 500/4.5 EX really has. Falk, I have both the Sigma (the older 500mm f/4.5 APO EX) and the Sigma 1.4x. What do you need/want to know? I just sold my K-7 in favor of the K-5 (which I have not received yet), so I cannot do any serious testing for the moment (my *ist DS just does not cut it with regards to AF speed).

I agree on the handholdability, but only for short moments. I have been lugging the lens around handheld in the summer, but after 2 hours I was definitely quite tired. I then used a monopod but it didn't help at all; it just made the lens harder to use. I'd say that the Sigma is great to shoot from fixed locations (from the car, resting on a beanbag, or a doghouse blind).
