The splodging of the blacks in 6400 K-7 makes it very limited in many uses. The 51200 output from K-5 exhibits something similar, making it usable only if it really needs it, or if you understand what the characteristics of the scene you are capturing require for a good cleanup. But we are talking about a 3 stop difference.
Understood. I was thinking more in terms of 1600-3200 on the K-7 as I don't think I ever shot 6400 on my K-7.
I'm still trying to get a better feel for 51200 (even though I don't really plan on using it). The results were decent for this particular shot, but others I took that day (especially when I didn't nail the exposure) looked pretty bad. Also, I don't know if the IQ is going hold up as well on images of faces, but I'll try that tonight and hopefully post some more raw files for John to work his magic on
But the bottom line is I think we might be talking about a good 2-3 stop improvement, which is pretty damn good in my opinion.
