But only up to 6400.
The splodging of the blacks in 6400 K-7 makes it very limited in many uses. The 51200 output from K-5 exhibits something similar, making it usable only if it really needs it, or if you understand what the characteristics of the scene you are capturing require for a good cleanup. But we are talking about a 3 stop difference.

Understood. I was thinking more in terms of 1600-3200 on the K-7 as I don't think I ever shot 6400 on my K-7.

I'm still trying to get a better feel for 51200 (even though I don't really plan on using it). The results were decent for this particular shot, but others I took that day (especially when I didn't nail the exposure) looked pretty bad. Also, I don't know if the IQ is going hold up as well on images of faces, but I'll try that tonight and hopefully post some more raw files for John to work his magic on

But the bottom line is I think we might be talking about a good 2-3 stop improvement, which is pretty damn good in my opinion.

6400 to 51200 is two stops.

6400 -> 12800 -> 25600 -> 51200 = 3 stops.

Yeah, it's taken a day or two for me to get used to it too. I think on some level it would be easier if we divided everything by 100 and make it 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512... much easier to remember powers of 2

The Nikon D3S - FF - has ISO 102,400 - noisy and grainy as expected but its there, and the lower ISO settings are great.

As far as I know, Pentax is the first APS-C manufacturer which has dared put up ISO 51,200 (I could be wrong) - and it actually looks bearable with NR-work and sized down to typical Blog or Flickr posts.

Next stop, ISO 204,800, with extended ISO to 409,600. The race is on.

PS I needed my calculator to 'cipher that last one.

You may find this article interesting. Basically, the writer suggests we scrap ISO altogether, and start using a scale of 1, 2, 3 etc.

Is It Time to Abandon the ISO Scale?

Just under expose the K5 by 2 full stops and you can see how well the sensor works at 204,800.

John, are you using Topaz Denoise for this series as well? If so, would you mind saving and sharing your presets?

Astounding.

My K20D ISO6400 shots look like Seurat.

The K-5, at 51200, is breathtaking. I know downscaling helps a lot, but still!

Am I missing something? Bearable????? Could you ever have imagined even getting a shot at 51,200? I think expectations are a bit high. Those pictures look awesome! I relate this to dxing radio stations. Some people will complain that they lose their stereo signal and have to listen in mono when the station is far away. At least you're getting the station! I'd imagine that after the noise reduction a pretty good size print could be made.
