K5 Buffer

what SD cards you use for measurments ? Please use Lexar® Professional 133x - it's very fast card

I ran both jpg and raw from iso 200 to 12800. I get 27 jpg at full speed before it slows, up to iso6400 where it drops off to 7 jpg bursts...RAW+ drops from 7 to 3 at iso6400. I don't like it especially but truth be told I don't have much need for long bursts at that high an iso....yet.

I use Sandisk 8gb Extreme III 30MB/Sec.

I read on some preview somewhere that the highest native ISO was 6400 and after that it was all done by boosting EV in post-processing. Is this true?

Can anyone tell me whether there is a difference to burst rate and buffering @ various ISO with LOWER resolution JPG's?

Why do they handicap their otherwise excellent cameras?

I remember that they already had one entry level camera whith extremely small buffer. Every reviewer was pointing to this.

Now K-5. It's almost useless for action. Burst for one second only. And only 4 frames in higher ISOs. Give me a break. Why did they bother with those high frame rates and new AF modes at all. They are not going to be useful with this small crippled buffer.

Now we again have the situation where Pentax entry level camera outperforms their flagship model...

it's slow card

Maybe Pentax is planing to release new Firmware with SDXC card support, then unload from camera buffer should be faster.

i think this is not card, but processing related.

i also believe that they can fix it to match low ISO buffer size.
this slowdown could happen due NR done for RAW in which case they could just give an option to turn it off.
or it could be from jpeg generation with advanced NR which is usually included in RAW file. they could then just skip NR for "preview" jpegs attached to RAW

slowdown is due big files which needs to be processed. Also there is no need to use 14 bit for shots which are above ISO 400, because it's increase file size also. Extra least significant bits contain nothing but random noise

Pentax could use 14 bits in iso 80-400 and for other shots just keep 12 bit or just make settings in new firmware release, that user could choose.

Indeed, that's just what I'm thinking. Though I don't use a burst of more than about 4 or 5 very often, I have found it handy in the past for sport where a player suddenly bursts a tackle and carries on running much further, so I've already taken about 4 or 5, then want to follow with a few more frames. It just seems almost so petty to leave it so low.

Lets look at this a bit more logically, If the issue arrives at 6400 then its possible to just shoot 3200 and push process later. It would not be recommended for 12800 and above, but 3200 to 6400 should not be much of a problem.
