Body only at Ryda, still, for $1585 (plus their usual extra bits and bobs which normally you likely might not necessarily have otherwise bought but which might be useful). I'm starting to cave in, even though I only just got a K-r a month ago.

DCW $1569 (also now listed as "Internationally Competitive Price at DCW" and their lens have dropped in price's too)
I didn't realise they had reduced their price, I stopped looking after they listed it close to 1700.

Not long ago they were at $1629 and I asked if they price match or can do a better deal. Their answer to me was "no"

I just did a price comparison yesterday for someone on Whirlpool who was after a Nikon D90 or a KR and I was surprised that there wasn't much difference between DWI and DCW...only about $100! Hardly worth buying gray for that saving.

I wouldn't take the risk with grey when the item ought to attract import duty. The cost of purchase if customs decided to charge would put it way over what DCW or Ryda have it for. *feeling itchy fingers in the wallet and itchy driving hands to head to Sydney tomorrow* I wonder if either of them have stock on hand.

Also B&H have the K-7 body only for about $870, quite tempting....
Problem free (most likely) K-7 for $870ish or a problem likely K-5 for $1560ish quite a difference in price.
And would not attract the import duty as its under $1000.

I was thinking that way also, until I realised that my advancing age and very restricted income probably means that the K5 will be my last DSLR purchase, ever. As it is, I likely need to sell the K200D (wahhh) and K-r to offset the cost of purchase. So, I want to get the best I can that's available right now. The next incarnation isn't going to be out for another year.

It's worth the extra, you won't regret getting the K5, beleive me! I was never tempted by the K7 but the DR of the K5 was irresistable. Don't fight it!

having those two-three stops of light edge over the K7 is sometimes the difference between getting the shot and not...for me the extra was worth it..its all about the end result and not so much the box that your using to take the image

I love taking photos indoors at night without the flash. That's all I have to say about that.

I got the K5 and love it...

... after futzing about with C*non, just so I could use my old zuikos on it. 5DII image quality was outstanding, but I hated lugging that thing about.

The dynamic range of the K5's files is mind-blowingly good, and my experience with the Limited lenses is.. um.. limited... (I have the DA21 and DA15, but have only shot casually, no jobs/assignments yet) but I am loving them so far!

Weird side anecdote on prices: I saw an FA 20-35 zoom go on ebay Australia yesterday for the ridonkulous price of $477! I know it was crazy, cos I was in the bidding war.

I feel sorry for the guy who 'won', because right after I lost that auction I hit up my favorite Japanese site for camera gear and snagged one for $283...

The lesson learned? Always, always go to the source.

hmm, can't do the work for you!

and don't want to dry my source up...

no, i kid. look, there are any number of websites that specialise in 'brokering' between Japanese shops and online shopping stores for western users - i just meant one of those.

take your pick, have a little faith, and learn to read between the lines using Google translate.

you have to factor in culture - the Japanese take far better care of their gear, it's a culture that inherently respects craftmanship, (so the second hand market is almost always worth the hassle because secondhand gear is VERY conservatively rated, most is as new or near mint), and it's the country of origin (pentax, but most quality photographic gear in general), so the whole supply end of the process is skewed, meaning prices are fairer than in the parts of the market (i.e. English speaking) where this stuff is scarce.

ever noticed how BMWs cost less in Germany?
