Are you talking about buying a used lens from ... say ... Map Camera ... and getting someone like PriceJapan to ship it for you?

ahh - okay, thanks.

not really into bidding - i like to buy at a known price from a reputable dealer. I know I'm paying more, but I can return the goods if something bad happens (not that it has).

I just picked up my K-5 from CR Kennedy in Mascot today; they just sent me a replacement camera with a new serial, and a January 2011 manufacture date, and there's no sensor stains that I can see so far

Now if Pentax can sort out the low-light front focus issue, then I'm going to be a very content guy

Nice, is there a circle stamp next to the serial on the box?

Also whats the average size of a DNG from a K-5?

Thanks mate

The circle stamp on a K-5 box, apparantly means it has been checked and passed for stains.

The original camera and box had a black circle stamp next to the serial number, and this camera had the sensor stain issue. So I don't think the black circle stamp is a reliable indicator as to whether the camera is stain affected or not. AFAIK, cameras manufactured after a certain point in mid December are in the clear.

I went to CR Kennedy, and all they wanted was the camera body; no battery, no accessories, no box. They took that body, and then two weeks later, returned me a new body only that had a new serial number, with no battery, no accessories, etc.

Body 1: manufacture date 2010-11-17. Came with firmware v.1.0 and had sensor stains
Body 2: Replacement body. Manufacture date 2011-01-05. Came with firmware v.1.01 and has no sensor stains (thus far).

Got mine swapped over a couple of weeks back. They, CR Kennedy in Brisbane, rang me said come on in, body sans everything. Swapped and update to latest firmware whilst I waited. I haven't looked at the photos for the stain yet, just lazy I s'pose. Did check on the back screen all looks good. Must remember it is the sensor manufacturer that has stuffed up not Pentax. I expect Pentax will be getting some recompense from Sony. I would love to hear the conversations over this stain problem. I expect there would be a fair bit of finger pointing.

Caved in this morning: bought at Camera House Newcastle for $1625. More than Ryda or the grey market but I decided that since they were kind enough to go close to $1600 as I asked, and that they are a camera place, not a department store, it was probably worth spending the bit extra.

Battery is charging as I type, no idea whether I'll have stains, all available appendages are crossed until I know for sure. Once certain that I don't (or a replacement is in the offing) I'll have to put my other camera gear up for sale.

Can't help wondering if any of the Sony cameras have the same issue

Well done, you will love it. Have you checked your serial number to find the manufactured date? Also read above re circle stamp on you box.

No stamps or circles but I've just done some outdoor shooting (nothing to post here) and have NO stains...

S/N is 3928xxxxxxxxx

How do I know what the build date is? (f/w version 1.01)
