With water and sky as background, would it not have been better to use EV+1 or something to get brighter exposures? Even considering that the seagull should not be burnt out... The pictures are somewhat dark now, and then it is harder to see how sharp they are.

Look at them in full size here. Dropbox - Photos - Online backup, file sync and sharing made easy.

And the girls running here. http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/13738865/1/Girls%20running?h=091286

I could have done that in camera or post I guess.

On my calibrated moniter they look OK'ish.

If you are running a calibrated monitor, and they look ok for exposure, I would try recalibrating at something closer to the 100 mark, they are way underexposed.
On the last set I have to give the picture close to 2 exposures compensation to make it seem ok in terms of brightness.

Just to add, the AF is very impressive.

More useful tests. All those seem to be in focus.

There should be an option in the K-5 to link the exposure and the AF point in the focusing area (if you are using a Pentax lens and multi-segment AE) so that camera exposure is set according to the AF point.

That feature is available on the K-x. (Menu > Custom 1 > 6: Link AE to AF point). That might help to meter objects like the seagull better.

Whooh, I just got run over by those girls! This is the best example yet I have seen of the K5 Autofocus. Very pleased with the result. Thanks Telfish for doing this.

You are right. However in defense I was really interested in the AF on these rather than producing perfect pictures. The exposure could have been more to the right. I was in TAV mode so they should have been closer. As has been said I could have linked the exposure to the af points which would have sorted the underexposure. I really did not have the time to run all these through lightroom to correct them as I though the AF was the point.

I am really pleased with these results, if you look at the full size images in my dropbox you can see that the success rate AF wise is really good.

What is so difficult for the AF capturing those girls running? (I know my K10D can do that. )
Are you sure that was fast action? To my eyes, these are teens running while holding hands....not the same as keeping BOLT in focus...
No offense, but the gull sequence is more convincing.
Cheers
